|whta||ok. i'm completely new to vim and am wondering how to enable syntax highlighting. the documentation is a bit too wordy for my current level of understanding.|
|Ori_B||you mean :syntax enable?|
|whta||does it work that simply?|
or do you have to indicate the language or anything?
|frogonwheels||:syn on - and yes, the filetype needs to be detected -|
but all that stuff is in place for most files.
- gets it either from the extension or the contents of the file where extension isn't there/isn't enough.
|Ori_B||whta: also, you may want to add it to .vimrc|
is that the startup script?
|whta||so i just place a .vimrc file in my home directory?|
oh, and no : for the commands in it
|Ori_B||eg: if you'd type ":syntax on" in vim, it's "syntax on" in .vimrc|
whta: lots of vimrc samples on the web. depending on the distro, vim has some pretty annoying defaults, too.
whta: my current setup is here: http://eigenstate.org/vimrc
simple, but it does what I want.
|whta||yeah, i googled it and founds lots of useful commands|
i'll take a look
|deryni||Ori_B: showmatch doesn't do what your comment says it does.|
|Ori_B||uh. did I mess up the comment?|
...yes, yes I did.
deryni: thanks. that's the problem with commenting a few months after you edit the file
|Ori_B||...oh, I also have a duplicated function.|
|aalhamad||please im trying to use vim to edit ruby .. but i can't see the vim-ruby project working with me i looked throught the documentation (README file) but still i can't make it working can anyboy help me plz|
i've installed vim-ruby but i cant make them work with vim
|CAiRO||why does this not work? :%s/http:\/\/(.*)\/.*/http:\/\/$1\//g|
if i remove the ( ) it does work
but the $1 does get relaced
|Nyoxi||you want to escape the ( ) and use \1|
