hoganbpwagon63: STI would work, but it wouldn't be generic... because you still need to match up the fields with the type... and if the types are generic, that might be hard
tweakfollowed a relatively straight forward howto on getting it working correctly with mod_fcgi, and the 'welcome to rails' page displays correctly, but clicking on the information about the rails environment expands to show raw code
hoganbpwagon63: depends on if you use belogs_to or has_one.
wagon63: might look into polymorphic associations as well
wagon63has_one
can the poly have more than one _type
tweakworks as expected with the internal server
happy to post the VirtualHost definition or if I'm better off trying #rails-deployment I can try there instead
hoganbptweak: first off, fcgi is just not worth it, unless you have no choice
tweakwouldn't want to post off-topic :)
hrm, seriously? all the howtos I've researched seem to think it's the cat's pajamas
is there any reason?
hoganbptweak: lots of reasons.
tweak: you're reading stuff that's 2 years old :( There's a lot of folks forced to use that
but the best approach is to use mongrel
if you have linux, you can use mongrel, mongrel_cluster, and nginx, pound, pen, or apache 2.2+ with mod_proxy_balance
tweakwell I'd rather not use mongrel to be honest, if for no other reason to just be difficult :)
hoganbptweak: why??
tweakmostly because the machine that's running the code is my home workstation (yes it's linux) and I have apache2 running a bunch of sites on there already right now
hoganbptweak: so?
tweak: your memory footprint and cpu usage will be the same
dmc68anyone know how to pull data from an Excel file via rake :db ?
tweakif I can get this rails site (which admittadly is a testbed site) working on the same setup it would be a bit cleaner in my mind
I'd prefer not to have 2 daemons doing similar jobs running when 1 can do both
hoganbptweak: 2 years ago, when I started this, I was just like you.
tweakhaha
oh dear
hoganbptweak: reality is that fcgi is 4 years old, buggy, has not been fixed, and runs like a dog
tweakare we talking fcgi or fastcgi?
hoganbptweak: though fcgi is newer, it suffers from the same issues
tweakok
hoganbptweak: though it's less bug-prone
tweak: think of mongrel like tomcat
tweak: it's trivial to run that on a higher port and proxy to it
many rails hosting providers do just that
tweakI don't actually know what tomcat is :E
versixI have a form with multiple submit buttons. Does anyone know how to tell the browser which one to press if the user hits enter?
valehru_tweak, oh god..
tweakversix: I'd use js
hoganbptweak: ok, that's fine... the idea though is you have a web server, and an app server
