jeffbskibackz, slicehost.com does 256 slice for $20 and 512 for $38, 1G for $70 which is usually cheaper than dedicated. And this will perform great as long as they don't oversell, which they haven't thus far.
lisathe one guy was getting into the tests by the end but the other is still very new to rails and needed handholding
ReinHMrPunkin: models don't have access to session
MrPunkin: but you could always modify the voted? method to take an id rather than a user oject
jeffbskibackz, yeah many people seem to have problems with them and also textdrive
MrPunkinReinH: true, but I still need to pass it every time. That answers my question.
ReinHMrPunkin: my simply_commentable allows both
backzjeffbski, how works slicehost.com backup? I get a ftp password to put my files on this using backup scripts on cron?
ReinH@photo.comment_by? 14 or @photo.comment_by?(User.find(14))
jeffbskibackz, I have heard good things about bluehost.com for a shared site. But you just can't beat having your own dedicated or vps
_codepoet_You can set a var in your model to be that of session
ReinH_codepoet_: but that breaks mvc
so don't suggest doing so
_codepoet_a = A.new; a.load_sess(session);
jeffbskibackz, they have a web console and you click to do instant backup or restore. And you can schedule daily and weekly. Backups do add $10/mo to the costs though.
lisaReinH: @photo.comment_by? 14 <--- ewwww
_codepoet_ReinH: how does it break mvc?
tpopeokay now can somebody tell me what ws-* is?
ReinHjeffbski: rimuhosting has a nice VPS setup with root access for cheap
_codepoet_: how does it not? your models accessing *session* data?
tpopeI've seen it in about 800 blog entries the last 3 days
_codepoet_No, your controller is setting data in the model that came from the browser, same as user input
jeffbskiReinH, yeah I looked at them too, but some people were complaining about overselling, so I went with slicehost.com. You have root on there too.
ReinH_codepoet_: the models are not a part of the request/response cycle
macographerRubyPanther: re: the alias thing, i was thinking it would be good to add an :attribute_accessor for the first alias used. does that sound like a good idea?
lisa_codepoet_: your model doesn't care about the world outside it
lonnyAnybody know the command line in *nix for a system beep?
lisalonny: echo -e '\007'
_codepoet_But their data could pertain to the model
ReinHjeffbski: I've had a good experience with obth a Rimu dedi and a quarter VPS
_codepoet_Maybe I should rephrase and say send the sessions DATA to the model :)
and not the sesison
object
backzjeffbski, then I make a snapshot of my virtual-hd like vmware do?
jeffbskiReinH, that is good to know. Good to have options
ReinH_codepoet_: user_stamp plugin does it, but it's a hack and I don't recommend it
macographeri was thinking that would make it a little easier for me to setup the form if i did that..
ReinH*both
lonnylisa: Ahhh... hmmm.... if it is the same in OSX then it is pretty much across-the-board then.
backzjeffbski, and each backup will cost $10/mo ?
