Kriyasurferchapel: and wow, the screen is really, really bright.
chapeli bet, im not a big sony fan after the ps3
but viao's arent bad
Kriyasurferchapel: Sony and IBM are ... I think 2 - 3 years ahead of the market. AMD/ATI are doing the heterogenous core strategy now, and it isn't as slick as the Cell processors... but it does get people get used to the idea
chapel: and yeah, Sony forgot they are making a game machine. Nintendo never forgot that fact :-D
chapelwell the thing is, for general processing, ie an os like linux/windows/osx/nameone
cell is wasted
vector based processors are not useful for general tasks
not to mention the cell processor has no OoO hardware
which means any code not explicitly coded for it, will suffer performance penalties just because
Kriyasurferchapel: yep. But once AMD comes out with their AMD core + ATI core on a single chip, Linux people / whatever OS people will start writing OS software against it. That is, more developers get more competant at that kind of programming style. By *that* time, the demand for Cell architecture will start to increase. It might be to late to save Cell, though.
chapelit only has one actual general processing unit, that has to also hold the burden of controlling the other cores as well
Kriyasurferchapel: what is OoO hardware?
chapelout of order
Kriyasurferchapel: hmmm... OoO may or may not benefit ... I mean, that's the Intel strategy. Long pipelines, lots of OoO stuff. In the long run, it may not be as great as it seems. Who knows?
chapelits amd's strategy as well
ever since 486
Kriyasurferchapel: as I remember it, AMD's cores have shorter pipelines. They got OoO, but the Opteron pipeline is not nearly as lengthy
chapeland with barcelona amd has beefed up its OoO hardware, and has matched or surpassed intels prefetching capabilities
Kriyasurferchapel: ahhhh, ok
chapelwell in this case, we are talking about 10 lengths vs 12-14
Kriyasurferchapel: gotcha.
chapelfor core 2's
pentiums are in the 20's
anyways, for gaming, the cell is wasted
and will not be fully utilized
actiondjwonk is having deja vu back to the Elec. Eng. days
djwonkis having deja vu back to the Elec. Eng. days
Kriyasurferchapel: that's ok. I'll buy one eventually to do other things with it
chapelwell
ill buy one too once its cheaper
because there will be exclusives
KriyasurferHeheh. It might. When Sony's bottom line starts to go red and prices get slashed even further. My friend wants to do stock modelling with the vector processor
chapelbut on the gaming front, developers are very skittish of the ps3 atm because its lack of sales
sony may be happy with 4 million units shipped, but no one else is when only half that actually sold to customers
Kriyasurferchapel: sure. I think there will be a lot of developers flockig over to the Wii
chapellol, well sony is in the red as far as they are concerned, and have been ever since they announced the price of the ps3, but they wont drop the price, not at least until before christmas season or right after, thing is sony is still cocky from the ps2, and is still making alot of money from it, so they feel they just have to wait it out
well the sad thing about the wii, is... its a controller
wow
a gimmick
that well will get old
