PhrogzHell, on ruby-doc.org, you'll see some methods listed in core that need a file req'd from stdlib to work.
teferiadam$ ri String#each_char
Nothing known about String#each_char
^-
mf_ircPhrogz: aha, so you're saying that ActiveRecord brought that method to tring objects, but ri doesn't know or tell the source
teferimf_irc: no, ActiveSupport
Phrogzmf_irc: exactly.
mf_ircok, thanks.
Phrogzteferi: It shows up in mine; prolly you haven't had your ri/qri scan rails sources.
teferiPhrogz: my fastri has scanned all of my gems
mf_ircso i'm off to learing how to 'split' :-)
PhrogzHrm. Wonder why you don't have it and I do, now.
teferiif I ask for fri for each_char, I get ActiveSupport::CoreExtensions::String::Iterators#each_char
Phrogzmf_irc: you can use each_byte, or split(//)
MrPhi there, im trying to do a system("") call from within ruby
and its just returning 'false'
teferiso perhaps the new version of fastri that I have is smarter :)
Phrogzheh
You're still using fri? :)
teferisure, it's faster than qri
MrPthe command string is :-
system("c:\program files\videolan\vlc\vlc.exe")
PhrogzYeah, but you hav to launch the server; I hate that :)
MrP - \\
Or better, /
mf_ircteferi: Phrogz: are there several different version/implementations of ri?
teferimf_irc: ri is the one that comes with ruby
Phrogzmf_irc - gem install fastri
teferifri/qri are from fastri
Phrogz: actually, mauricio recommends that you use the non-gem version
since gem startup overhead is nontrivial
MrPPhrogz: cheers.
teferi:P
PhrogzWell, non-trivial in his mind. The .3s are acceptable for the simplicity for me :)

mf_ircshould I install any of those yet? ...as a newbie... or stick with basic ri fort starters? (after all that's why I learned about this issue :-))
PhrogzFWIW, that's what my qri shows for each_char
teferimf_irc: you should get fastri
Phrogzmf_irc - I recommend it. It's just much faster.
teferiit is a great piece of software
