erikhAria: are you using pure UID methods or are you leveraging IMAP's async capabilities?
AriaMostly pure UID, but getting more async stuff in there too.
erikhyeah, with a daemon it sounds possible
TheOutlanderWhat do you guys think the big web mails are using ??? Yahoo, hotmail, gmail ???
erikhthey're using custom apps
AriaTheOutlander: Custom.
manveruvery custom :)
erikhheh
TheOutlanderso with imap and stuff u cannot get scalability like that ?
Ariascoopr: http://mail.theinternetco.net Username guest@theinternetco.net password Aeco3ahr
scoopraria, thanks
AriaTheOutlander: Not neccesarily.
The interface is deliberately spartan, but it could be styled without /too/ much effort.
TheOutlanderAria: You are very optimistic!! :)
erikhhmm.
AriaTheOutlander: Nah, I understand the points where IMAP can be scaled or not. Its only bottleneck is a cluster IMAP server needs a central source of sequential numbers. Not exactly rocket science.
TheOutlander: After that, you can just throw hardware at it.
More machines/drives/load balancers/etc.
and I've heard of two dual-processor machines of yesteryear handling 50Kuser loads.
scooprhm, I mostly miss a link to the mailboxes view (from every other page).. and a small bit of styling =)
Ariascoopr: Yeah. I've been thinking about that, how I want to implement that.
scoopr: But for < 1500 lines of code, I'm happy.
TheOutlanderAria: thats interesting ... maybe I can use you as a consultant on my project ...?
scoopraight =)
AriaTheOutlander: Not with my unpredictable free time. But feel free to throw interesting questions at me if I'm around.
erikhHm. I may have to go to camping.
TheOutlanderAria: Sure, thanks!
Ariaerikh: The productivity benefits people claim with rails? I'm getting 'em with Camping. Average time to implement a major feature has been in the 10s of minutes. Like "Oh, what about caching the ____ ?" ... "done"
or "What about a compose message screen?" ... 20 minutes.
erikhheck, I'm getting them with CGI and a little dsl massage
I like rails, but it's not good for every project
AriaYeah.
(I never could make Rails work without drinking the big pile of gems koolaid)
scooprcamping is a little bit too magic for my taste.. not that rails has that too
erikhAria: hm. I'd really like to get your eyeballs on eyemap :)
AriaIf you're around tomorrow when I'm awake and not past two beers o-clock, I'd love to. Prod me if I'm on.
scoopr: Indeed it's magic. But at least the magic is small enough to remember.
TheOutlandermagic more more more
AriaEw, magic.
TheOutlanderlol
