RandalI'm sorry I helped you now.
Seriously
overkordbaeverDon't know if it's even that book
eden_cit's a good book, it's worth the $
Randaldon't be an ass. if you have it, erase it.
"Learning Perl 6" will be available for personal download.
but for the prior versions, no.
overkordbaeverDoesn't seem like I have it
RandalOr anything else from O'Reilly?
overkordbaeverI have a printed book from O'Reilly :P
(linux security cookbook=
Randalwhich one?
overkordbaever)
Randaloh
overkordbaeverThough, one thing that's hard to pirate is books, it's not too nice to read on screen and printing costs as much as buying the book
nubaRandal> I'm sorry I helped you now.
oh come on randal
Randalcome on what?
if he was pirating my books, why wouldn't I feel that way?
nubadont you think he can be educated and maybe contribute to the community at some point ?
LornRandal: where i can download "Learning Perl 6"? ( not for pirate :P )
overrider_i sometimes like to have a pdf reference
RandalLorn - you can download it ... FROM THE FUTURE!
nubapeople do mistakes, you dont just "garbage collect" them
do make mistakes
Randalnuba - if he repents, no problem
but if he had kept it, I would continue to feel sorry
and would not help him again
LornRandal: haha, ok :)
Randaland would brand him a pirate, and hope that others would also not help him
we have many economic models for producing quality books. We have to decide up front if it'll be public download or not, as it affects who gets paid and when and how. you can't change the model after the fact.
that's why, up front, we're deciding that Learning Perl 6 will have personal downloads for free.
because we can adjust everything else behind the scenes to accomodate that.
for example, reduced sales to O'Reilly means we have to use fewer editorial resources, so to accomodate, we're publishing draft chapters for community review earlier.
it's a complex tradeoff.
pirates CANNOT make the choice for us "after the fact". it just doesn't work. people are getting ripped off then.
nubasure
Randalbrian made an interesting comment that pirates generally stop pirating the first time they produce a difficult collaborative project. :)
nubaglad to see you (& it seems, o'reilly) are open to other economic models too
Randalthe amount of work to make Learning Perl a quality book needs to have an economic offset though.
