silichasbruck: perl is better. end o story
SpoonMeiserchasbruck: Perl is very useful, but not so good for encouraging best programming practices
Hinrikchasbruck: http://www.shlomifish.org/philosophy/computers/education/introductory-language/
shortenHinrik's url is at http://xrl.us/vqcp
Anarchchasbruck: None. Not being facetious, Perl is just too hard initially.
Thurynsup
superbob`Hi
kd_Anarch: no, lisp is too hard initially
SpoonMeiserAnarch: I think that's the opposite of the problem: perl will work, even if you're not programming 'properly' - could encourage very bad practices
chasbruckoh, actually I do have more than 3 days programming experience. I forgot to mention my entensive career in ZZT OOP language ;)
kd_perl gives you enough rope to shoot yourself in the foot
but what doesn't
SpoonMeiserkd_: I don't know what type of rope you use...
HinrikPerl's rope is the best, it can shoot projectiles
actionAnarch sadly goes to read `google Win32::AdminMisc`
Anarchsadly goes to read `google Win32::AdminMisc`
kd_I'd like to see you shoot yourself in the foot with rope in any other language
pjesiHinrik: liEr
f3ewkd_ PHP?
C++?
C?
silidon't learn php
kd_no, PHP gives you enough rope to hang yourself with
php is not for learning it's for running away and avoiding
f3ewchasbruck, what do you mean by "general computer experience"?
chasbruckCan anyone with experience with both Python and Perl think of anything that one language is capable of, that the other language isn't?
f3ewchasbruck, Python has that horrible enforce whitepsace thing
Python doesn't have CPAN
silikd_: i think lisp is one of the easier languages to learn once you understand recursion
f3ewor equivalent
kd_perl has better regex support and python doesn't have cpan
cpan is a huge reason to learn perl
and it's no worse than javascript as a beginner language imo
jimbut note... to use most of the things on cpan, you'll have to at least understand references
silijust learn ruby or python. they suck equally and are a little easier to learn
than perl
Hinrikpython's all about "there should be ONE good way to do things" while Perl's more "There's More Than One Way To Do It (tm)"
though the two are not mutually exclusive, of course :P
chasbruckHinrik: That was an incredibly useful link, thank you
silifirst languages don't really matter. if you only plan on learning one language you're fucked to begin with
