#perl - Tue 27 Mar 2007 between 11:07 and 11:12

rindolfperlygatekeeper: next time RTFM, STFW, and ATFM.
ATFM == Ask/Answer the fine man.
JATFM.
rgsteeleyrlnry: Ah, silly me. Thank you.
yrlnrySure.
perlygatekeeperlike I was working on this really cool idea I had that would record sizes, checksums, permssions, and such on key directories and files and note differences for intrusion detection
in perl
yrlnryI wrote the world's worst macro processor last year.
jagermanrindolf: My point here is that Word, for most purposes, is very easy to use.
rindolfjagerman: I hate word.
perlygatekeeperafter about a month of messing with it, it was almost done, then someone said, hey you should check out 'tripwire'
jagermanrindolf: oowriter takes some of the ideas, screws them up, and leaves out some important ones.
perlygatekeeperARRRRG!
rindolfjagerman: WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS was much better.
jagermanI still can't figure out how to select a piece of text and add a comment to it.
rindolfjagerman: too bad it was written in Assembly.
jagerman: but I hate the concept of a word processor.
A word processor does not scale well.
integralAssembly with a really good macro processor is quite fun
rindolfintegral: yeah.
perlygatekeeperand he continued talking, slowing down enough to realize that noone was actually listening to his rant anymore, he becomes silent and goes to the #perl corner to pout by himself
rindolfintegral: that or VAX assembly.
perlygatekeeper*SIGH*
integralI wonder how practical VAX is as a virtual machine. Could simh outperform parrot? :-P
jagermanrindolf: err, scale? How is that significant?
rindolfjagerman: I cannot write long documents in it properly.
yrlnryperlygatekeeper: I was listening, but you telegraphed the punchline.
rindolfjagerman: not without studying it.
jagermanrindolf: I agree, when it comes to openoffice, but not in Word.
Sure, there are various problems with Word
integralperlygatekeeper: There's another one now, called AIDE
perlygatekeeperI mean I came up with that idea without any prior knowledge that it was already done
and on VERSION FUCKING 3 already
jagermanfiles get too big, things get complex--but from the user's point of view, those aren't a big deal as much as the front-end functionality.
integralyeah, that happens a lot
rindolfjagerman: in word too!
jagerman: and OOo is better than word.
perlygatekeeperthat's why I like coming here
rindolfWord can only scale up to 64 MB docs, while OOo much more
jagermanrindolf: For me, writing an essay, I care mostly about content. Editing paragraphs, moving things around, adding notes, footnotes, endnotes, etc.
