| maasha | merlyn: are you suggesting any databases in particular? |
| merlyn | sqlite for little stuff, postgresql for big stuff |
| GaijinPunch | Or people who's providers only provide mysql |
| merlyn | providers are a dime a dozen if you have a provider stuck int he 90s, move |
| revdiablo | s/who's/whose/ # pet peeve |
| garywsmith | Woosta: it could have been done in 2 tables but since a couple of the fields are text fields we opted to move them out of the primary table. This added a singinificant performance increase for reads since the text fields are for archive purposes, they are hardly ever used. |
| imMute | sqlite is pretty nifty |
| GaijinPunch | moving takes work. Work takes time. Not everyone has it. Some people still have source from the 90's as well. |
| Woosta | ahh cool |
| revdiablo | 2 tables... 50 million records... yikes |
| merlyn | "who's" is valid... as "who is" |
| garywsmith | immute: I use sqlight for a couple differnet small projects. it works great. |
| revdiablo | merlyn: Yes, but in the sentence he should have used "whose" |
| merlyn | yes jsut trying to show it's not a universal rule |
| revdiablo | Yeah, but it triggers my OCD when people use them incorrectly. |
| garywsmith | revdiablo: that's why we split it up a little. But it seems to work fine. It's mostly data warehousing (not really transactional). |
| Woosta | merlyn's been defelonated so he's even more crotchety now :) |
| erxz_paste | "Jmax-" at 71.6.194.243 pasted "POE _child errors" (55 lines) at http://erxz.com/pb/1618 |
| merlyn | ex-exfelon! |
| revdiablo | garywsmith: A lot of things work fine in a suboptimal state =) |
| Jmax- | does that mean anything to anyone? i'm clueless with what a _child event is even supposed to look like :\ |
| revdiablo | garywsmith: I have not analyzed your design, so I don't really know if it is suboptimal, I'm just pointing out that as a faulty argument garywsmith: I guess I should just be happy for you that it works ;) |
| garywsmith | oh, yes, I agree. We are working to optimize it. It's a mysql db powered by a php frontend. We are working to clean up some stuff. Moving some processes to perl and eventually splut the database up a little (since we can move some of the old historical data elsewhere). |
| Jmax- | ... or why i need one |
| Khisanth | never done so for me luckily I haven't had a need for it much |
| zamolxes | I always end up editing the files in debian/ a lot anyways :) |
