JohnQhow compliant is pcre? enough that I can feed it this? ^\s*(?=[^\s])(.+?)\s*=\s*(?=[^\s])(.+?)\s*$ or does it need to be cleansed? :-)
merlynask in #pcre, not here
perlbot, pcre
perlbotPCRE is crap. It is hardly comparable to Perl's regular expression engine. Don't bother inquiring for help with a regular expression in perl related channels as the answer you'll get will most likely not work since PCRE is missing most of the "powerful" features that perl's regex engine contains. See also: LPBD
JohnQalright alright...
Chris62vwnever had to use PCRE
JohnQyeah and there is no #pcre ... apparently its a taboo word in here.. be careful when talking about it. perlbot may spam you.
Chris62vwnothing is really taboo. some people just like to freak out
my answer to your question would be: try it and see
dkror read the pcre documents which describe precisely how it differs from perl, :)
JohnQyeah... unfortunatly, tias in this case requires downloading, compiling, and installing the library, followed by figuring out the library syntax, compiling and running.
Chris62vwwell, wouldn't you need to do that anyway?
unless you're giving a regex to a friend or something
JohnQIf the answer is "no" ... Then I wont bother trying it...
dkrbut we use perl, we don't use pcre. :)
so we aren't qualified to know. :)
Chris62vwI don't even use grep anymore. I use perl -n
dkrChris62vw: I noticed gnu grep has a -P for perl regex now, heh
JohnQ: there you go, use grep -P. it's probably using pcre
Chris62vwdkr, cool :-)

JohnQgrep: The -P option is not supported
goldfish:)
merlyngnu grep -P is not "perl regex" - it's PCRE regex
it can't be Perl
they didn't embed Perl in grep. :)
and the pcre website has all the docs
you don't need to install it just to read the docs
IkarusPCRE...............
JohnQwell, since -P doesnt work anyway... I doubt they embedded pcre either.
merlynIn a crazier world, Larry Wall could sue for the use of "perl" to describe PCRE
Ikarusmerlyn: he should anyway
dkroh, weird. grep: The -P option is not supported I wonder why they have it ni the man page then
perlygatekeepermerlyn! Chris62vw
Chris62vwyo yo perlygatekeeper!
dkrmaybe it's a compile time flag to link with pcre
