#suse

<kkathman> schteff: yep you are on gnome I suspect
<schteff> hm ^^
<q27__> The only issue i'm having with suse is that my computer locks up for no apparent reason. Locks up intermittently and I don't think its suse 10.2, because it happened with suse 10.1. My hdd is new and i've swapped out video cards and power supply. Should I be looking at anything else?
<schteff> but at the Beryl Settings Manager there is sth. about an cube
<damada> q27__: have you checked your RAM?
<ReAn[SuSE]> schteff, try holding CTRL+ALT down and left-click-dragging your screen
<aka_druid> q27__, if you have nvidia card, thats a hell of a suspect
<q27__> got nvidia....is this a know issue with suse?
<aka_druid> its a know issue with life
<schteff> hm no
<damada> well, personally I would not think it is the nvidia card
<damada> if it was an ATI, then probably ^^
<ReAn[SuSE]> odd aka_druid: i thought nVidia had much more stability in linux than other cards
<aka_druid> q27__, like, if you have a screen frozen and your mouse moving... its there
<aka_druid> its a closed source blob.. what would you expect
<aka_druid> being the less bad doesnt make it good
<ReAn[SuSE]> lol
<schteff> okay i'm go now
<schteff> thanks all for your help!
<chil> "writing to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' failed. Bad file descriptor"
<chil> can someone share some light on that error pls
<schteff> bye bye
<chil> nm, need to su first, heh silly me
<kkathman> lol
<q27> just locked up and I had to reboot. Will it store anything in the system log?
<kkathman> ReAn[SuSE]: as with just about anything, your mileage may vary... I have had ZERO problems with beryl/nVidia, etc some people have no problems with ATI..it just varies :)
<ReAn[SuSE]> odd, i think i prefer the terminal version of YaST than the GUI
<Jaguar> xdm, ftw!
<aka_druid> q27, not sure... how does it lock?
<kkathman> omg another teenie with his FTW crap
<aka_druid> can your mouse move?
<jengelh> not if it's dead
<q27> I can view and see the desktop, but cannot move mouse. Also when it locks I cannot use keyboard
<aka_druid> oh no, jengelh is awake
<Jaguar> teeny? hahaha, k
<ReAn[SuSE]> q27: what video card?
<Jaguar> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyHw8ZK9NaY
<aka_druid> I bet its nvidia
<g7vac> join #klug
<jengelh> FTW = For the world...
<q27> Nvidia, but for some reason it boots in to konsole (shell 5) by default so I had to resort using the onboard video which works fine (boots into konsole 7)
<kkathman> alot of people pay no attention to the driver that they get and install - they just blindly use the most recent, which many times wont work with older cards
<goktug> hello every body
<q27> Would it say why it locked up in the system log?
<kkathman> q27: what video card and model?
<ReAn[SuSE]> (yea, i wanna know too, so i wont buy one)
<q27> Well, like i said i'm currently using the onboard video , but the card is an nvidia 5700
<ReAn[SuSE]> lol
<kkathman> q27: well, whats the onboard video chipset ?
<ReAn[SuSE]> you've got the nVidia Hoover Vaccum
