#math

<JimDangle> so not i dont have anything
<srart> this is mathimatica
<JimDangle> oh
<JimDangle> i thought it was like a tutorial thing
<srart> euler, octave some others are free software, may run on windows. no graphing (without other software) but same shitty syntax.
<srart> it is, it lets you see where your logic breaks down.
<JimDangle> oh
<srart> calc 2 is much more difficult
<srart> 3 isn't to bad, it's calc 1 on steroids in multi dimension (mostly 3d, some more)
<JimDangle> cool
<JimDangle> hope i make it through calc 1
<JimDangle> and 2
<JimDangle> i only go up to calc 3
<srart> slacker ;-)
<JimDangle> i have to take other math classes though
<JimDangle> ill probably take calc 4 though
<srart> linear algebra and diff eq, after that is scientist and mathamaticians.
<JimDangle> yeah i think i have to take both of those too
<srart> if you can, go as far as you can. Actuaries make 6 figures, but it's all the math you can stand and then some.
<JimDangle> well CS only requires up to calc 3 and other math classes
<JimDangle> but i like math, so ill probably take as much as i can
<Kasadkad> Presumably actuarial work is mostly statistics?
<iratsu__> can anyone recommend a good book on analytic number theory?
<srart> yep. One of my math teachers friends was one. Stat, number theory, all kinds of silly things, and test (fed or state, not sure) but 12 of them, and most nerver get them all done.
<gzl> number theory? que?
<JimDangle> i probably wont make a whole lot of money
<JimDangle> but it should be enough
<srart> iratsu__: not really but http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/Global/OCWHelp/avocw.htm should have some stuff to interest you
<srart> gzl, research on prime numbers and such
<gzl> right, but ... an actuary?
<srart> insurance companise, risk analysist
<iratsu__> srart: thanks
<srart> np
<gzl> ...
<gzl> you're misunderstanding. I'm asking why an actuary would be doing number theory
<JimDangle> =P
<KD19> ed are you still around
<srart> not sure as to the why, I'm guessing looking for trends beyound what you can initially see from just throwing out some points on a plot and finding a best fit curve.
<gzl> sounds suspicious. but ok
<JimDangle> what do actuaries to
<JimDangle> do*
<srart> JimDangle: http://www.beanactuary.org/about/whatis.cfm
<JimDangle> man
<JimDangle> actuaries would be good for multithreaded programming
<JimDangle> unless its just for math stuff
<JimDangle> anyways
<JimDangle> im on #2 now in my work
<JimDangle> im not sure if what i have so far is right, but i have tan'(theta) = (y / x)'
<JimDangle> this is fun and interesting
<JimDangle> damn, i think i went too far
