#kde

<sredna> i haven't seen a computer with vista installed :-)
<pete> I have. It's alright, but it's not so good that you should make KDE look like it. Kinda defeats the purpose of it. imo the only thing that should look like Vista is Vista.
<wolsni> i was talking with a friend recently who acts as microsoft representative on campus
<wolsni> and we were comparing vista's 3d effects with beryl
<wolsni> melter: "look, wobbly windows"
<LiquidNerd> and how vista looks like an early version of KDE?
<wolsni> sorry, that should have been me, not melter
<wolsni> apparently kopete does autocompletion when a word ends with a colon?
<pete> I don't get the point in Vista's aero jazz... Seems a bit superfluous to me.
<pete> "Oh look, I can fold over this corner of a window using twice the time and effort that it would take me to switch windows"
<wolsni> anyway, i showed her the wobbly windows and her response was "windows doesn't have anything like that because it's not useful. Hey, look, I can set a movie as my desktop wallpaper"
<wolsni> which I found rather amusing
<pete> hahaha
<peppe> I'm bored of those who state that KDE (or, in general, a GNU/Linux distro) should be just like windows
<AlexElliott> Those are people who should be using Windows
<impulze> hm how do i setup kdeprint to use my client.conf in /etc/cups?
<troy> impulze: dude, probably a question for your distro channel :)
<impulze> hm why is that? since my lpstat -a shows the printers
<flight> peppe... I would say that KDE and Gnome are like Windows to encourage people to switch
<P-Luc_Auclair> any of you knows when KHTML will support Opacity?
<flight> if Linux is so foreign in appearance it's adoption will slow
<troy> impulze: oh, sorry, I missed the 'kdepint' part of your question :)
<flight> rather if Linux is too foreign looking
<impulze> troy: oki
<troy> P-Luc_Auclair: is Opacity in the official css specifications?
<impulze> troy: the thing is you have to put in the server in kdeprint.. when i don't use ssl it works fine but as soon as i use ssl kdeprint won't recognise it. even when i use https:// as hostname
<P-Luc_Auclair> troy, I'm pretty sure it is in CSS3
<impulze> so it would be cool if kdeprint would actually use the client.conf instead of it's own
<pete> flight: indeed. The fact that I could relate to KDE after coming from a Windows-orented background was one of the things that helped me to switch.
<impulze> :q
<impulze> argh ;)
<P-Luc_Auclair> troy, actually yes, it's part of the CSS3 color spec
<troy> P-Luc_Auclair: if it's actually part of CSS 3 (and not just an IE extension), then khtml will get support for it, given enough time...
<wolsni> that's one of the reasons I use KDE rather than Gnome
<peppe> flight: I don't think that they should be the copy of the look and feel of windows. It's pointless. They should just be simple and familiar to use
<wolsni> Gnome is like a slightly different Windows; KDE is like a much better Windows
<wolsni> imho
<AlexElliott> flight, I think we have to make a distinction between "like" and "just like"
<troy> wolsni: well, that hasn't stopped people from switching to the mac... it's quite 'foreign' to windows users...
<AlexElliott> Similarities, and consistency in usability is useful
<flight> peppe: The problem is the last thing you said, "familiar"
<peppe> troy: good point
<wolsni> i'm not saying that something has to be like windows to be good
<flight> yes but as of now I believe there's more Linux systems deployed than Mac systesm
<flight> systems
<troy> I really think that it's the available applications that make people use a system, not it's appearance... it's why Enlightenment is less popular - they don't have their own good apps...
<AlexElliott> But turning KDE into a Windows port is not useful, and means that it is no longer unique or has any GUI improvements over Windows
<peppe> flight: you gain familiarity by using a system... I am not the right person that should give a definition of familiarity :)
<flight> oh I agree Alex, however adopting some of the characteristics can't hurt
<flight> true peppe, but the average user, will not spend the time
