#gentoo
<renihs> wifiisevil, eix vanilla-sources
<brotkasten> wifiisevil: emerge -pv vanilla-sources
<doc|home> wifiisevil: kernel.org and vanilla are just the plain non-patched sources. gentoo-sources (the ) has been patched by the gentoo devs but just a little.
<wifiisevil> pekster: but wouldn't the gentoo one be better in the setting up bit.. as I am setting up a gentoo linux?
<renihs> Przemcio78, dunno, tail /var/log/emerge.log
<renihs> is it really compiling kde-libs or something else atm?
<doc|home> wifiisevil: but really, you need a net connection for gentoo. It's a requirement really :/
<wifiisevil> I figured.
<renihs> indeed :)
<edit_lp2> makes life much easyer
<renihs> flat rate prefered
<Przemcio78> all packages kdelibs depends on are already compiled, it's the last package that compiles that long
<pekster> wifiisevil: YOu can switch kernels later, and sure, you can go wtih the gentoo patches, but you first need to put the patch tarballs for Gentoo into distfiles as well, as you can't patch without the patch files :)
<edit_lp2> i have done the sneakernet route to many times, its pita
<renihs> Przemcio78, no clue, my kdelibs are usually done in 20 minutes
<wifiisevil> well why can't I have the gentoo-sources?
<renihs> wifiisevil, you can :)
<wifiisevil> I need gentoo-sources 2.6.19-r5 it says, so where do I get that?
<renihs> emerge =sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.19-r5
<doc|home> wifiisevil: you can, but it'll be a real pain to get all the various bits required. Now imagine that for every application :/ Really better off going with a) a decent net connection or b) a binary distro :/
<pekster> Przemcio78: If it's just the last one, I'd control-C it and try it again. First with the --pretend option to insure it's doing what you think it is, and then give it no more than 1 hour on your machine, as compiling only kdelibs on a 2200+ shouldn't take more than that
<doc|home> renihs: he has no net connection
<brotkasten> wifiisevil: you can download everything you need to install a package just by stating emerge -f <pkg>, e.g. emerge -f gentoo-source
<renihs> AAA
<brotkasten> s
<renihs> ups :)
<Przemcio78> renihs, mine will be in 20 hours, is athlon xp 2200 too slow for using gentoo?
<edit_lp2> BLuFFaLo, how you getting on
<renihs> wifiisevil, then you need to fetch them somewhere you have inet and put the packages into /usr/portage/distfiles
<renihs> Przemcio78, no something is strange
<wifiisevil> brotkasten: that will be hard without internet. What do I sneakernet the output of that command over to a computer with internet? :P
<brotkasten> but he's on the net right now, is he ?
<renihs> Przemcio78, shouldnt take close to that long but i have no clue
<pekster> Przemcio78: I run Gentoo on a sempron 2100+ without issue
<renihs> pekster, he claims to be compiling kdelibs for 18 hours already
<renihs> thats a bit too long :)
<edit_lp2> hah
<brotkasten> aren't there some minimal gentoo vmware images available somewhere ... he can use this to download stuff and take it home
<wifiisevil> okay doc|home so it will be easier to just use the vanilla kernel? I don't understand that, as the one designed for gentoo should be easier :S
<pekster> renihs: Right, and I suggested above he Ctrl-C it and start it over
<brotkasten> ok
<renihs> pekster, ah :)
<renihs> yah
<wifiisevil> brotkasten: yeah, but I'm pretty sure school computers don't have vmware :P
<renihs> vmware server is free of charge
<Przemcio78> i compiled kdelibs like for months ago on arch and it took in less than four hours :(
<brotkasten> wifiisevil: ok ... sorry ... but do you know the vmware player ?
<pekster> Przemcio78: As we've said, something is not right with that compile, because on your PC it will not take that long under normal conditions for that single package
<wifiisevil> yes I do know the vmware player. I may not use it as school.
<brotkasten> hmmm ... that's bad
