#gentoo
<pekster> Perhaps, but not something I plan on using or helping develop :P
<endra> I can't wait to use distcc on my celery box lol, celeron1 500mhz, I'd say 10x slower than my p2 300mhz :-/
<britishseapower> testleper: :-)
<testleper> britishseapower: worked, eh?
<britishseapower> perfect
<endra> testleper: pub-distcc network where we can have a list of "trusted" compiler boxes ..
<endra> testleper , pekster : the difference between this and a binary distro is that this is customizable with use flags, etc
<pekster> endra: The reason why you don't need to do anything with /etc/distcc/hosts or FEATURES="distcc" on the fast box is that it will not be distributing jobs to your slower boxes to compile (as that would be just silly given the huge speed difference)
<endra> pekster: yes, im aware of that lol
<pekster> endra: Also, you don't even need to start the distccd service on the boxes that won't be accepting jobs, which makes life easier
<endra> pekster: by the way, thank you for the help
<pekster> endra: Not a problem. My first time with distcc was quite a struggle too :)
<endra> pekster: technicly i got it the first time, it was the monitor that was deceiving me !
<testleper> endra: isn't this already in play? folding@home, etc... how is it different? and I still don't see the advantage, aside from you having faster compile times :)
<pekster> Well, that's just the problem with the checksum idea. It's not just the soruce code that determins the binary, but the USE flags (for Gentoo), the ./configure options, and the GCC options used
<endra> testleper: whats the advantage of distcc?
<endra> testleper: faster compile times maybe? lol
<renihs> heh
<pekster> That creates an astranomical number of potential binary files for any given source
<renihs> distcc pwns
<pekster> many thousands
<testleper> pekster: conservatively...
<endra> pekster: I'd still rather have 30 dedicated boxes helping me compile big packages like KDE (customized to my liking) rather than doing it myself lol
<renihs> 30 boxes? ...
<renihs> for kde? omg
<renihs> .)
<testleper> endra: what he's saying is that gentoo is too flexible... and implementing your idea creates an impossible number of permutations. impossible in the sense that it's a management nightmare
<pekster> If they're 30 local boxes, it'll work, but if they're 30 remote boxes, even with the host/1 syntax in /etc/distcc/hosts it just won't wnork. It'll get so bogged down and fail
<renihs> omg is a quick run anyway
<renihs> kde i mean
<endra> testleper: but if tamed, its a masterpiece.
<testleper> endra: indubitably
<testleper> good luck
<endra> well no im just going to go back to my little pet project
<endra> and then when im doen that, I'll.. think about considering the oppurtunity to check out if its possible to do this
<testleper> I would settle for 10 boxes compiling mysql right about now. What the hell happened to libssl?
<renihs> >>> app-office/openoffice-2.1.0 merged.
<endra> pft.. my pet project rocks
<renihs> finally :)
<testleper> Anybody else have problems with libssl today?
<endra> testleper: not me, not yet :-)
<renihs> not yet
<renihs> but synced yesterday
<renihs> and world upgrade
<testleper> I should be sleeping...
<romanos> just downloaded gentoo minimal, can i just get it on my flash disk and boot from there?
<pekster> As should I :\ 02:35 CST :\
<testleper> pekster: Chicago here... you?
<pekster> Twin cities, MN
<endra> yea.. and I should be getting married, having children and a 9-5 mon-fri job with a $85,000 / year salary
