#gentoo

<jwickers> wifiisevil: first do a "emerge -pv rtl8187" then you hav the list of package that need to be built
<pekster> endra: listen and allow are not exclusive. Can you paste your /etc/conf.d/distccd for your helper box?
<aSH^> could someone please help with this ebuild error.. the problem is its trying to link with a 32bit library for some reason.. http://rafb.net/p/MPP5pJ75.html
<endra> pekster: one minute, I'll clean it up
<jwickers> wifiisevil: then for those package you can look into the ebuild to see what files would be downloaded
<endra> pekster: doesn't even seem to be running lol
<pekster> endra: You *need* an allow statement for all helper boxes, otherwise the default is to reject connections. The listen just makes it bind to a particular IP (useful if you have more than 1 IP address)
<pekster> endra: Yes, distccd needs to be running too :P
<wifiisevil> how does one open the ebuild?
<pekster> endra: On the helper boxes only. The host driving the comple does not need distcc started
<endra> * Starting distccd ... [ !! ]
<endra> Can't I get more verbose detail?
<pekster> endra: Check /var/log/messages (try tail /var/log/messages or such)
<jwickers> wifiisevil: for example : cat /usr/portage/net-wireless/rtl8187/rtl8187-1.10.ebuild i see http://dev.gentoo.org/~genstef/files/${P}.zip which means http://dev.gentoo.org/~genstef/files/rtl8187-1.10.zip
<jwickers> wifiisevil: your versions may differ
<jwickers> wifiisevil: as you could not update your portage tree
<wifiisevil> how about I just... compile the driver?
<wifiisevil> would that be easier?
<jwickers> wifiisevil: but ... it would save time and trouble to have network with cable :D
<wifiisevil> I think so.
<wifiisevil> I wish I had ethernet!!!
<jwickers> what is that box without ethernet :D
<jwickers> wifiisevil: well download these files on the internet box, copy to usb key, copy into your gentoo box in /usr/portage/distfiles/
<jwickers> wifiisevil: then emerge rtl8187
<wifiisevil> buying a 10m ethernet cable now :). Still can't use it all the time though, because it would go in the way of people walking past.
<jwickers> wifiisevil: just for installing, after you will get wifi anyway
<endra> pekster: seems to be running now, time to test :-)
<endra> pekster: will they automaticly start showing up in this distcc monitor?
<wifiisevil> jwickers: on ebay, I won't get it straight away :(
<wifiisevil> I need my computer now.
<pekster> endra: Yes, although be warned that the ./configure stuff is not distributed (conftest.c and conftest.cpp are done on localhost only) and some packages have distcc disabled or force make -j1 due to threading problems in that package)
<wifiisevil> I guess I have to.. install gentoo now.
<wifiisevil> what if I don't get wifi, can't I just download the kernel and install it from usb drive?
<endra> pekster: does distcc really help make things faster?
<endra> hrm, things = compilations*
<pekster> endra: Depends on the speed of the network and the speed of the machines involved. For jobs that support compile threading, it makes a huge difference
<jwickers> wifiisevil: yes you can
<jwickers> wifiisevil: same way i tol you
<endra> pekster: do you recommend I raise -j2 to -j5 on my bad box?
<pekster> endra: Just the 2 machines? And how many processors and cores in each, and what are the speeds?
<endra> The good machine is P4 3.some ghz 2gb ram, shitbox is 350-450 mhz
<wifiisevil> so, jwickers: I go to Gentoo-Portage website, download the kernel ebuild, put it in /usr/portage/distfiles then type "emerge kernel"
<pekster> endra: In that case, I would put only the remote machine in your distcc hosts file so that compiles will never happen on the slow box
<wifiisevil> so, jwickers: I go to Gentoo-Portage website, download the kernel ebuild, put it in /usr/portage/distfiles then type "emerge kernel"
<wifiisevil> yeah?
<jwickers> wifiisevil: no
<endra> pekster: you keep saying 'hosts file', do you not mean distcc-config --set-hosts ?
<pekster> endra: So I'd suggest make -j3 and keep localhost out of the /etc/distcc/hosts file, and only put the remote machine
<pekster> endra: distcc-config --set-hosts just edits the /etc/distcc/hosts file for you
<endra> pekster: I don't have localhost in there :P
