#gentoo

<wifiisevil> okay.
<jwickers> crzydrnkmofo: stage were overrated
<wifiisevil> crzydrnkmofo: stage 1 is too much for me. I don't even like stage 3 :@
<crzydrnkmofo> Just goto the install guide it will guide you through it.
<wifiisevil> well I do like stage 3, but I mean it is already long enough.
<crzydrnkmofo> i never liked stage 3, stage 2 was ok for a P2, but I like my stage 1 (yes it can take days)
<jwickers> i did stage1 on my laptop, but whatever.
<wifiisevil> jwickers: use emerge -G? but I don't have internet.. how can I do anything emerge?
<crzydrnkmofo> i did a stage one on a 33Mhz machine with 32 MB ram, and a 10Gig HD before that took forever
<wifiisevil> crzydrnkmofo: If I was gentoo-savy, I would have done a stage 2 but meh.
<crzydrnkmofo> wifiisevil, you cant. u dont have inet on it
<jwickers> wifiisevil: if the file are there it won't download them, you have to setup / copy files from a CD to /usr/portage/distfiles/
<wifiisevil> 33mhz??????!!!!!!!!!!! my NINTENDO has triple that.
<crzydrnkmofo> do you have a NIC on that machine at all ?
<Crypticfortune> wifiisevil: just curious, but if you dont have a net connection on that box, why are you installing ssl? =P
<crzydrnkmofo> yes 33 MHZ (it was a 486DX)
<wifiisevil> crypticfortune: all I'm installing at the moment is kernel.
<wifiisevil> and I WILL get wifi.
<jwickers> i never re-did an install since 2 years ago so i don't know how that changed. And i never did networkless
<Crypticfortune> wifiisevil: ah ok ^^
<wifiisevil> actually, maybe I should set up wifi now and save myself from this bother :P
<crzydrnkmofo> i'd like to get a really old laptop case (the big ones) , mod it out and put current hardware in it. that would rock.
<jwickers> probably
<jwickers> if it is supported by your livecd
<endra> whats up guys
<wifiisevil> so I just copy the rtl8187.ebuild (wifi driver) file into /usr/portage/distfiles and then type... what?
<wifiisevil> no use flags or dependencies?
<pekster> wifiisevil: ebuild files don't go in distfiles
<jwickers> wifiisevil: hum no
<jwickers> wifiisevil: check if you wifi is already detected or not
<wifiisevil> oh okay. what does then?
<wifiisevil> jwickers: my wifi card is not detected.
<crzydrnkmofo> net-setup wlan0
<wifiisevil> okay. I'll try that now.
<wifiisevil> net-setup wlan0..
<mmm_> i just installed vim but i noticed it got installed in /usr/bin/vim instead of /bin/vim. since my /usr resides on another partition, it might be unreachable in case of emergency. can i force vim to install into /bin somehow?
<wifiisevil> wait no, I don't HAVE a wlan0 because I don't have the driver to set it up as that yet!
<jwickers> wifiisevil: check if the livecd as the module for the driver, lsmod, modprobe ...
<crzydrnkmofo> or try a simple lsmod
<wifiisevil> okay.
<crzydrnkmofo> jwickers, u beat me to it. lol.
<Doksi> try net-setup by itself it might show ra0
<jwickers> hehe
<crzydrnkmofo> wifiisevil, sometimes (most) wifi wont work outta the box even though its detected because it needs a WEP/WPA key, SSID etc
<jwickers> i thought livecd had quite complete genkernel with all the modules
<jwickers> if it is supported by the kernel you hsould see the device in ifconfig and dmesg
<crzydrnkmofo> jwickers, it does. but it never worked OTB for my wireless when i had it because i had to set the WEP key and SSID
<crzydrnkmofo> ifconfig not always but dmesg yes
<wifiisevil> crzydrnkmofo: yeah, I know. But I am pretty sure by card won't work out of the box anyway because it doesn't load the driver.
<variant> lo all, I have disabled root logins in /etc/securetty. Do I have to reboot to have this take affect?
