#gentoo

<Gruelius> okie dokie
<t35t0r> does X11 on gentoo PPC have acceleration for powerbook g4?
<Gruelius> what do those parameters do? do i need --newuse?
<wifiisevil> oh , wait, I have to have TWO gentoo mirrors in case one stuffs up, huh?
<texnofobix> yes you'll need newuse
<Gruelius> cheers
<texnofobix> -u = update -D means Deep
<nulleqzero> bye room!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111
<wifiisevil> so GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://mirror.pacific.net.au/linux/Gentoo/ http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/gentoo/"
<texnofobix> nulleqzero forgot the one at the end
<Gruelius> cheers
<t35t0r> gentoo.mirrors.tds.net
<texnofobix> Gruelius: hopefully that will work for you
<t35t0r> pair.com
<Gruelius> should i emerge inside or out of X (i dont need to use the comp for rest of tonight)
<jwickers> Gruelius: emerge in a screen a
<Gruelius> kk.su
<jwickers> so no need to bother
<texnofobix> night folks
<bsdfox_> Gruelius: I do it out of X cause X crashes sometimes and bash doesn't :)
<Gruelius> heh bsd. Where should i mount my 50gb (Data) partion (music/work) e.t.c., should i mount it in home, mnt, dev or is it possible for me to use it as my desktop and all that?
<paperboy401> you can mount wherever you want
<Gruelius> how do i mount it so it appears as a HDD icon on the desktop
<Gruelius> like on mac's
<klees> how can i install the latest beryl? i currently have 0.1.4 installed even after having all packages added to the keywords file with **
<jwickers> Gruelius: mnt should be good, in KDE you should have the icon on your desktop
<jwickers> should work with other DE that does it too
<Gruelius> for the hell of it, what should i name it :P whats a good name, second disk? Secondary Disk? Data, Personal Drive
<jwickers> i vote for data
<jwickers> really, whatever :)
<Gruelius> jwickers: /dev/hda4 /mnt/Data ext3 -what other opts do i need
<jwickers> Gruelius: noatime
<Gruelius> 0,0 ?
<jwickers> yop
<wifiisevil> When installing gentoo, as I don't have a network connection, I don't have to copy that dns info accross before I move into my gentoo environment, do I?
<Gruelius> also while we are here, to mount my motorola phone we had to make a line: /dev/motorola /mnt/motorola vfat noauto,user,umask=0000 0 0 . The problem is that this allways shows up in Natulius even when the things not plugged in. We did it so i would be given permission to access the phone storage. My usb key is giving me the same permission problem, how can i get it to allow me to use the usb ke
<jwickers> wifiisevil: if you mean resolv.conf, then no, this is only needed if you have network
<wifiisevil> thanks, jwickers.
<wifiisevil> I hope these things stick to your memory after installing gentoo the first time, because that would probably halve the time it takes: figuring out how to do what you have to do.
<jwickers> Gruelius: you mean the device appears unmounted ? that happens when the DE doesn't play well with udev/hal
<Gruelius> what is DE? and how can i fix the issue?
<jwickers> Gruelius: happens to me on KDE when dbus or hal is not running/working, when it is working, devices appear only when plugged. Not sure about Gnome but i guess it should have similar behaviour
<jwickers> Gruelius: DE Desktop Environment, like Gnome or KDE
<Gruelius> heh, how did you manage to fix it?
<me22> Gruelius : try commenting that line in fstab and adding yourself to the plugdev group.
<me22> Gruelius : in grub I also see fstab lines for unplugged devices
<Gruelius> commenting?
<jwickers> Gruelius: yes you need to be in plugdev, but that is for automounting, the line in fstab can still be there
<Gruelius> so in root what command do i do again? i forgot the command
<jwickers> Gruelius: me22: i have those lines for my usb drives, and it is working fine
