<marienz> Logix101: notice all the "~" in the keywords ("~amd64" etc)
<[R]> hydrogen: the same reason stage1 was dropped is the same reason i will never recommend that
<hydrogen> [R]: thats not that helpful
<Logix101> thanks!
<hydrogen> [R]: the reason we have a change chost guide is because stage1 was dropped
<hydrogen> [R]: to some extent
<[R]> if poeple just got the right stage to begin with
<ewoud> [R]: I always did stage 1 before it was dropped
<hydrogen> [R]: if one has a 486 or a 586...
<marienz> [R]: yes, but doing that may involve timetravel if it's an already installed and configured system.
<tzaeru> marienz, well will be seen.. I head to sleep now and put all important stuff to emerge and then reboot etc.. -->
<DJGummikuh> hey what is a good video text application in portage?
<ewoud> but what gets broken with a different CHOST?
<marienz> tzaeru: at least I'm certain this is the problem (well, I'm certain this problem needs to be fixed before you get dri in 32 bit apps at least)
<reisio> DJGummikuh: a good what?
<marienz> ewoud: a lot of stuff has the CHOST hardwired in in certain ways.
<ewoud> ok
<marienz> ewoud: you'll usually get compilation failures because it tries to use an i386 gcc you no longer have. Sometimes you won't hit them until long after the CHOST change and a lot of them are impossible to detect with tools like revdep-rebuild.
<DJGummikuh> reisio: to view "videotext" I don't know how it's called in english...
<DJGummikuh> like teletext or somethign similar
<marienz> ewoud: it is possible to change CHOST and rebuild enough stuff to get a sane system, but it is not exactly trivial.
<ewoud> marienz: ok
<fizzle> hey im installing gentoo but it wont install coldplug and it keeps running the configure script for sysklogd over and over
<ewoud> marienz: but will you notice anything about it if you follow the changing chost guide?
<marienz> ewoud: I kinda doubt that guide is 100% failureproof but I haven't read it recently
<MeowCats> I'm trying to install Gentoo. I'm during the Stage choosing stage. Which stage should I choose?
<marienz> mzbot: gentoo chost changing guide
<mzbot> marienz: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/change-chost.xml
<digital0001> What do I do if revdep-rebuild gets stuck, wanting to emerge the same package every time?
<reisio> digital0001: you come here
<[R]> MeowCats: the stage3 that correstponds to your arch
<marienz> MeowCats: one matching your cpu. What is your cpu?
<[R]> MeowCats: just like what the handbook says
<DJGummikuh> reisio: did you understand what I meant?
<fizzle> when i go to installc coldplug i get this: checking whether build environment is sane... configure: error: newly created file is older than distributed files! Check your system clock.
<reisio> firelord: you don't want coldplug, udev supplanted it
<digital0001> reisio, Good! Then I am in the right place. :)
<MeowCats> [R], I don't see it on the handbook, I'm here http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/2006.1/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=4
<reisio> DJGummikuh: subtitles?
<bad_code> blech, libsndfile is barfing its ebuild with a libFLAC error
<MeowCats> marienz, I'm using an opteron
<reisio> digital0001: which package?
<[R]> MeowCats: oh... yeah, you should not be using the installer
<[R]> MeowCats: its crap
<fizzle> how do i set my system clock?
<marienz> MeowCats: probably the amd64 one then.
<DJGummikuh> reisio: no not really.. it's more like a parallel information system... you can view text news, tv program and stuff like that on it
<MeowCats> [R], what do you mean? how am i supposed to install it then?
<Boohbah> fizzle: date
<DJGummikuh> reisio: so it's quite some more than simple subtitles
