#gentoo

<sykopomp> t35t0r: It ain't going past nautilus :P
<digital0001> melodos, I started using gentoo 1,5 years ago, with no Linux experience what so ever. I never looked back.
<CoCo_kid594> Gentoo.. I thought that's all there was for flavors of linux :) the red hat cd's went in the trash..
<marienz> melodos: the installation documentation is pretty good. As long as you're not afraid of using a commandline you don't need a lot of actual experience/knowledge to get through it.
<t35t0r> sykopomp, emerge --skipfirst --resume
<meeseontheleese> melodos, its up to you, suse is good, and it does give you some ideas, but really gentoo isnt that hard, its when you get deeper into the system of any distro that makes it hard, to get a basic system to install everything and get the x, if you just use suse, it wont really prepare you for setting up gentoo, the only way to do that is to chat in here or read wikis, but then once you get it, the rest starts flowing
<g9sh> brianw: not that old, but was planning on using flux anyhow
<TylerDurdened> hi, can someone recommend a way to install gentoo? would it be better through minimal install or through the installcd?
<Skunky> t35t0r: he can't emerge world, he's changed his CHOST and not followed the how to change your CHOST directions. (:
<[R]> TylerDurdened: minimal
<brianw> g9sh: aye
<t35t0r> ohh great
<sykopomp> Skunky: I followed the how to change CHOST directions
<TylerDurdened> [R], can you give a reason?
<MTecknology> Skunky: it's already slected
<Skunky> TylerDurdened: minimal cd and the handbook.
<[R]> TylerDurdened: cuz the installer is crap?
<brianw> g9sh: the new xfce is pretty nice, but not nearly as configureable as flux
<meeseontheleese> melodos, I started with ubuntu, and it prepared me in no way for the cli installer of gentoo, but then again, we now have a live cd with a graphical installer, havent tried it, but it might help a bit
<g9sh> brianw: what benefit does the minimal cd provide over the other?
<marienz> Skunky, [R]: changing CHOST may be pretty tricky, but installing a recent version of glibc with an i386 CHOST is at least as tricky afaict.
<sykopomp> Skunky: I read the guide on how to do it and was as careful as I could be. Sadly, that wasn't enough.
<t35t0r> sykopomp, start over from the livecd or installation CD
<MTecknology> Skunky: should it pretty much be set to what my livecd is using?
<Skunky> MTecknology: you'll find that LOTS of things are already selected. turn off the things you don't need.
<brianw> g9sh: smaller size and no dependencies on X
<[R]> marienz: people should just use the correct stages to begin with
<MTecknology> Skunky: aight, i'll try it as is, ty
<digital0001> TylerDurdened, I would start with a minimal installation and go from there, just pay attention to the handbook.
<marienz> [R]: shrug, if it's shortly after an install then yes, just start over, but if it's an already installed system it's possible (although tricky) to change CHOST.
<Skunky> MTecknology: i personally refuse to use an initrd, so I compile in (ie, * rather than M) things that I will always need.
<TylerDurdened> digital0001, problem is, i cant access the handbook from the minimal install, right? but i could with the installcd because it has gnome while installing
<sykopomp> [R]: Ah-ha! Orbit won't compile, and it's an error having to do with i386... pastebinning now...
<marienz> [R]: maybe not less work than a reinstall if you're unlucky, but probably less downtime.
<brianw> TylerDurdened: the standard install method is best and most supported
<melodos> meeseontheleese, i told you, i've installed gentoo last year and i didn't knew anything bout gentoo.. just read the handbook all steps .. took me about 2-3 hours if i remember well and i made it work..
<g9sh> brianw: if i proceed with the console installer here with the cd i've got in, i should still be alright?
<[R]> sykopomp: your systme is *TRASHED*
<TylerDurdened> brianw, standard would be?
<[R]> sykopomp: of course your gonna get i386 errors
<MTecknology> Skunky: aight, i'll do the same
<MTecknology> ttyl
<marienz> sykopomp: hilight me too please, I think I've helped someone else through this in the past.
<g9sh> brianw: or is this a strong recommendation
<brianw> TylerDurdened: using the handbook and installing via the shell
<brianw> g9sh: you can use any livecd
<[R]> sykopomp: you dindt follow the guide if your getting i386 errors
<digital0001> TylerDurdened, I it is there still.
<meeseontheleese> melodos, ah good to hear, sorry I didnt read that prior, Im updating my chost on my system, burning a cd, compiling a new program, and writing a blog
<TylerDurdened> brianw, i dont really know how to access the internet using a terminal and i dont think i really want to, itd be a nightmare navigating and reading
