#gentoo
<Adlai> however, it will take a little longer and a little more work to do most things
<marienz> I don't think "hard" is the right word though.
<marienz> not a lot of handholding, flexible.
<melodos> i've spend last 2 months on trying linux distros :P i don't complain though, it was fun.. well, pretty much :P
<g9sh> brianw: oh you mean when I get in installer? I found something on gentoo-wiki about my specific hardware and the exact kernel config...
<meeseontheleese> melodos I did that too, I tried suse, ubuntu, debian, slackware, knoppix, kororaa, and gentoo
<g9sh> brianw: should I try and go for the whole nine now, or continue with standard, then recompile kernel after?
<brianw> g9sh: I mean use the nadbook and install using the standard install method
<melodos> and you stuck with gentoo huh?
<brianw> g9sh: the gui installer is not for someone new to gentoo at all.
<CoCo_kid594> I am trying to restart my mail server it says it cant bind to a specfic port how can I make it release that port? I tried to restart xinetd that didnt do it..
<ebfe> this channel needs +m so badly
<[R]> ebfe: yeah, THAT makes sense
<g9sh> brianw: ahh gotcha, alright thanks. I'll review the handbook a little further
<CoCo_kid594> I can't reboot because of all the users online
<MTecknology> Skunky: check #flood
<[R]> CoCo_kid594: your server is still running
<melodos> meeseontheleese, u think gentoo stands out of everything else?
<meeseontheleese> melodos, yeah, I went from gentoo back to ubuntu because I didnt want to set up the system myself, first time i had ever used cli to install a system, but then after I went through it the first time, I realized my worries were not warranted
<zention> CoCo_kid594: which mail server
<sykopomp> [R]: Here's all the errors I can possibly grab for you that I know of :P http://pastebin.ca/362747
<t35t0r> yes so Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS uses i486 and it runs slow as molasses ..perhaps it's the NFS
<brianw> g9sh: use this cd : http://bouncer.gentoo.org/?product=gentoo-2006.1-minimal&os=x86 , and this handbook: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?full=1
<meeseontheleese> melodos, ive used a bunch of package managers, and some distros without pm's, package managers make the job so much easier, no dependency hunting, which takes off so much stress
<CoCo_kid594> ah.. yeah it didn't shut the mail server down correctly I tried to send a kill signal..
<[R]> sykopomp: that looks like a bug in nautilus
<g9sh> brianw: thanks for your help!
<t35t0r> CoCo_kid594, are you using gentoo?
<t35t0r> CoCo_kid594, which MTA ?
<MTecknology> Skunky: you htere?
<CoCo_kid594> it did kill it.. but now I get a message cant bind to SSl port..
<Skunky> MTecknology: yeah... looks like right now, ahci is claiming the disks. what I don't know is if that's the best thing to use... sometimes a piece of hardware will respond to 2 different drivers, and it's up to you to decide which one works better.
<sykopomp> [R]: But I didn't get the problem until I upgraded GCC... nautilus was working fine before then, and it's the exact same build
<marienz> sykopomp: iirc remerging the package orbit-idl-2 belongs to (orbit) fixes that.
<[R]> sykopomp: you upgraded from what to what
<melodos> meeseontheleese, heh.. well to be honest though.. i'm not an experienced linux user.. should i stick with suse and learn the basic stuff and then jump to gentoo?
<sykopomp> marienz: I'll try tht
<marienz> sykopomp: iirc the problem is it has a hardcoded path to gcc embedded in a script or binary somewhere. Give that a shot.
<Skunky> [R]: don't let him fool you, he changed his CHOST in his gcc "upgrade"
<sykopomp> [R]: i386 to i686
<brianw> g9sh: also if it is an older machine, I would suggest using fluxbox or xfce for your wm/de
<meeseontheleese> melodos, really its preference, but I can say I like portage better than apt-get (my second fave package manager), after some tweaks, Ive had less issues with packages then Ive had with some binaries
<MTecknology> Skunky: where is it located in the config?
<CoCo_kid594> ok coarse... I use hula.. bugy a little bit.. it runs kind of flakey..
<[R]> sykopomp: changing chost is gonna break your system
<[R]> why didnt you t ell me that BEFORE
<marienz> melodos: it'll cost you a bunch of time before you're comfortable with gentoo, but I don't think you need a ton of linux experience to install and use it.
<t35t0r> sykopomp, emerge world
<sykopomp> Skunky: I said "upgrade" because I'm a dum-dum :(
<Skunky> MTecknology: device drivers, serial ata drivers
