<benklop> sha256sum: not sure what will work and what wont, but you can try to remount your FS read-write, then add the modules to blacklist (or delete them) then reboot
<sha256sum> sounds like a good idea
<sha256sum> I'll give that a try... hold
<benklop> sha256sum: mount -o remount rw / to remount your root fs writable (assuming it is not writable upon boot
<sha256sum> actually what's the specification for the init in kernel opts?
<sha256sum> "init=/bin/bash" or "init /bin/bash" ?
<benklop> i'm pretty sure its init=/bin/bash
<streuner> !listvals init
<dpkg> Factoid search of 'init' by value (15 of 253): 2.6 problems ;; alguem ;; anti-aliased ;; b1ff ;; bnf ;; can't mount root ;; console dropped packets ;; flw25 ;; literal i forgot root's password ;; meaning of stable ;; restartx ;; rfc1516 ;; sober ;; sysv cycle ;; tape drive.
<streuner> !i forgot root's password
<dpkg> 1) 'linux init=/bin/sh' at a lilo boot prompt (hold Shift while booting to make one appear), 2) 'fsck' your root file system, 3) 'mount -o remount,rw /', 4) 'passwd root' 5) 'mount -o remount,ro /' 6) reboot -d -f (exec /sbin/init should work); For GRUB (e.g. sarge): in step 1, press 'e' to edit the kernel setting (add init=/bin/sh to the end of it), 'b' to boot. Steps 2-6 are the same.
<sha256sum> I'm thinking my hardware must sux0rz
<sha256sum> but at least me sp33k is 1337
<sha256sum> heh
<sha256sum> ouch... it boots if I turn off the onboard ethernet device... yeah, my hardware sux0rz... anyway, I'll edit blacklist to turn off the ohci1394 and install a PCI network card... hopefully that will do it
<Coke> Does the Debian 2.6 kernel (Etch) have any type of automounting feature that automatically mounts/umounts cdrom's and USB-sticks?
<pihhan> Coke, i believe hal can do that
<pihhan> Coke, at least it does make interface to KDE to ask user what should be done
<streuner> wb(r) Guerin
<Thms> how can I uninstall dnetc because it take all my CPU
<ness> hi, I want to install the qc-usb module, do I have to install qc-usb-source and then build the module?
<sha256sum> okay
<sha256sum> blacklisting did not prevent it from trying to load
<antum1> Hi, can anyone help, I'm having trouble logging into my mail server via pop3, The user gets accepted but the password doesn't
<sha256sum> I used the specification "blacklist ohci1394" in the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file
<sha256sum> is that correct?
<streuner> !blacklist
<dpkg> Sarge installs the Hotplug and Discover packages to help with hardware module loading - which can often load undesirable modules. Add 'skip foo' to /etc/discover.conf and 'foo' to /etc/hotplug/blacklist to prevent them from loading. Don't forget to remove it from /etc/modules (if present). in etch and sid, modules should be blacklisted in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist. IMPORTANT: ask about blacklist-initramfs
<karsten> antum1: How are you logging in?
<streuner> sha256sum: did you ask for 'blacklist-initramfs' as well?
<karsten> antum1: and is it POP, POP3, or POPS?
<karsten> antum1 erm, apop, I think. Or is there an SSL POP as well?
<sha256sum> streuner: in the blacklist file or as a kernel option?
<streuner> !blacklist-initramfs
<dpkg> methinks blacklist-initramfs is If your kernel uses an initramfs image (most recent ones do), you need to run update-initramfs in order to refresh its copy of blacklist table. Otherwise, early bootup won't follow your blacklist requests in e.g. /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
<antum1> karsten its POP3 and I'm using telnet just to test the system
<antum1> I'm in the process of setting up the mail server
<luddite> Guerin: you there?
<ewanm89> antum1: Which pop server are you using?
<antum1> karsten SSL is installed however, so perhaps I need to login via that all the time?
<Coke> I'm trying to set XTerm*font: 10x20 in my ~/.Xdefaults, I then xrdb -merge it, but when starting a new xterm it still uses a smaller font. Why is it refusing to go with my settings?
<antum1> ewanm89 I beleive its pop3, how do I double check?
<Coke> (starting xterm with -font 10x20 works fine)
<ewanm89> antum1: Only if it gives an authentication denied message, and plain text auth is disabled in the configuration file.
<ewanm89> antum1: Which configuration file are you using?
<antum1> ewanm89 I've been working on /etc/postfix/main.cf
<Coke> I'm trying to set XTerm*font: 10x20 in my ~/.Xdefaults, I then xrdb -merge it, but when starting a new xterm it still uses a smaller font. Why is it refusing to go with my settings? (starting xterm with -font 10x20 works fine)
<Coke> (sorry, wrong window)
<ewanm89> antum1: Could you pastebin a copy?
<antum1> ewanm89 yeah sure
