<undesktop> markybob: and then these scripts fail
<markybob> undesktop, are you using sid?
<olsen> Eitan: if xorg is available on sarge, go with that
<undesktop> markybob: you mean me?
<talexb> Still encountered errors ..
<markybob> undesktop, yes. wherever it is that you're encountering failed post-inst scripts?
<undesktop> talexb: hm... only thing I could think of would be to edit the script
<Eitan> olsen: I switched to xorg on my sarge installation. Now the windowing system is broken and not working. How do I switch back to using xfree86?
<undesktop> markybob: yes I'm using unstable and it happens relatively often
<olsen> Eitan: what wm do you use?
<markybob> undesktop, right. it's called 'unstable' for a reason. that doesnt make having scripts in debs a bad design decision. if you want stable, dont use unstable. not sure where the problem is here
<Eitan> olsen: gdm?
<olsen> Eitan: i don't know, remove xorg and install xfree86?
<Eitan> olsen: ok... I'll give it a try.
<olsen> Eitan: gnome should work fine on xorg, weird
<talexb> undesktop, Thanks .. it's too late for me to be futzing around doing that. I wouldn't mind if this were an old crufty installation, but it's about a week old, and this was going to be my first major update.
<olsen> Eitan: ok, good luck
<undesktop> markybob: hm... I claim scripts are only necessary for system things
<talexb> Bloody hell.
<Eitan> olsen: yes... very wierd... my debian desktop is not working anymore... I'm stuck with command line until I can fix it.
<markybob> undesktop, what does that even mean? installations are "system things" ?
<olsen> Eitan: does X starts?
<undesktop> talexb: oh well, I also don't know why they force one to execute these scripts
<olsen> Eitan: when you launch with the X command
<Eitan> olsen: X starts, but before it goes to the sign-in window... it exits and goes to the command prompt.
<undesktop> markybob: system packets... packets required to do system related things
<predder> Eitan, there should be an error?
<Eitan> olsen: all of this began after I installed all the "recommended" backports in synaptic.
<olsen> Eitan: try putting "gnome-session" on your ~/.xinitrc and launch X with 'startx'
<Eitan> predder: no error was displayed.
<olsen> Eitan: oh
<olsen> Eitan: i see
<talexb> undesktop, I don't care if it's a script or not -- I just want to it to either a) b) fail with some good diagnostisc. An error return 2 is meaningless except to the original developer.
<talexb> Sorry, a) work, or b) fail ..
<undesktop> talexb: I agree, but you see: these scripts are just stupid bash scripts... so... *shrug*
<talexb> undesktop, OK .. I can hack shell .. where are these fickin' scripts.
<Eitan> olsen: I have to figure out either how to unbreak my windowing system, or simply remove all of the (stupid) backports and revert back to the previous unbackported and working setup.
<undesktop> talexb: the scripts are under /var/lib/dpkg/info/packetname.bla
<markybob> talexb, download the source and look in the debian folder. then dpkg-buildpackage -b to create a package from the source
<undesktop> where bla is postinst, preinst etc
<Eitan> olsen: I'm going to go and try it now. I'll be back...
<undesktop> talexb: I guess you could hack them
<olsen> Eitan: ok, if you need something don't doubt to ask, good luck
<P_Kable> How to make deb from KDE svn sources ???
<undesktop> wow 12000 files in /var/lib/dpkg/info definitely fun
<markybob> P_Kable, you dont.
<undesktop> P_Kable: better not
<P_Kable> :(
<talexb> markybob, I'd love to download the source, but aptitude is currently bunged up with all the updates that didn't happen beacuse of frickin' kdebluetooth.
<Rusty1> talexb: try apt-get clean
