<Guerin> ma3x: not quite
<simonrvn> won't block, but that process will demnad most of the cpu time
<Guerin> ma3x: just if that process needs time, it'll get it. It doesn't play nice with the others.
<yoshi> on the first booting after i installed it it decided to try and load more stuff i fed it the CD it didnt think that was what it wanted and tried to connect to the net after i told it there werent any more cd's
<Lord_Devi> ma3x: Well realtime priority is almost never recommended unless you know /exactly/ what you are doing.
<yoshi> wasnt*
<Guerin> if that process needs 100% CPU 100% of the time, nothing else (except kernelspace) will get any
<ma3x> Guerin: if you for eg. set mencoder to -20 , it will block most of your net traffic
<Lord_Devi> Yeah, long story short ma3x. Don't use -20 =)
<Guerin> ma3x: not quite, but you're on the right track.
<Guerin> don't drop below zero for anything if you can help it
<Lord_Devi> Use like.. -18 or something.. give other priorities at least a little bit of your cpu
<ma3x> Guerin: there is really no point of doing -20
<Guerin> just deprioritise less-critical but hungry processes
<Guerin> even one nice point can make a lot of difference, too
<ma3x> Guerin: give me an example
<Guerin> try playing mp3 at nice 0 on a slow box where something else wants cpu at nice -1
<Guerin> you'll get choppy sound
<Guerin> for instance
<bleanna_unux> How do I find the IRQ & IO of a device?
<Lord_Devi> http://www.funfreepages.com/flash/electronik_supersonik.php <--- Best music video EVER.
<puff> Well, that's annoying. Turns out "sudo chkrootkit" does nothing, you have to be su'd to root and then it works.
<Guerin> bleanna_unux: isapnp? Use pnpdump
<Guerin> puff: seems sane to me.
<bleanna_unux> Guerin: im installing debian (minimal) and its asking from the NIC IRQ & IO.
<ma3x> Guerin: if you for example change mencoder's priority from 0 to -20, it won't help
<abrotman> bleanna_unux: leave it blank
<Guerin> bleanna_unux: huh, it shouldn't need to know that sort of thing
<ma3x> because mencoder even at -20 or 0 or +20 uses maximum of the CPU
<Guerin> ma3x: depends what you mean by `help'
<ma3x> in case other processes are idle
<ma3x> Guerin: I mean it won't run faster
<Guerin> ma3x: it won't go faster, unless it's slow because something else it hoggin cpu time.
<bleanna_unux> Guerin , abrotman: well, its not detecting my nic. but i know the driver is r8169
<ma3x> that's right
<Guerin> bleanna_unux: what kernel, what installer?
<ma3x> but renice is good to put mencoder at +20 so then I can use skype with a good sound
<ma3x> otherwise I get choppy sound
<Guerin> ma3x: you've got it.
<ma3x> hehe
<Guerin> see, RTFM is fun!
<bleanna_unux> Guerin: the minimal installer, 3.1rc4
<ma3x> yeah, not all the time
<Guerin> hm, are those supported by sarge?
<Guerin> bleanna_unux: 2.4 or 2.6 kernel?
<Guerin> bleanna_unux: whicvhever it is, try the other.
<bleanna_unux> Guerin: problem, no idea what kernel it is. its built on 20050317sarge1
<puff> Guerin: Maybe it'd be less annoying if docs on chkrootkit were easier to find.
<Guerin> bleanna_unux: if you just ran the default installer, you're in 2.4 - reboot and try install26
<Guerin> puff: mm, yeah. I've never R that particular FM
