mkl1525Hi, (kde 3.5.5) I'm running debian etch. when opening a file where the file command says "abc.txt: ISO-8859 English text" in kate I get a question mark for every german umlaut even when I set the open format to "iso8859-1" - could anybody give me a hint how to solve the problem?
actionJucato is trying to write a blog/letter for his mom and sister, explaining what he's been doing for the past year (Linux, Kubuntu, KDE...) "in plain English"...

thiagoJucato: yeah, right :-P
good luck
Jucatothiago: heh lol yeah...
kojiroThere is only one user on this machine. I would like to boot and go directly into the kde session, and then immediately lock. Any ideas?
thiagoI tried that once, but my job was even worse: explaining a consultant's job
JucatoI might try translating it too lol
oh...
thiagokojiro: kdm can do that, I think.
Jucatomy mom basically doesn't know much about computers.... and my sister is a bit non-geek savvy... :P
kojirothiago: kdm can log me in, I dunno about locking
Jucatokojiro: I think there was once a blog from a KDE developer with exactly like that...
srednamkl1525: in kate, use the tools->encoding menu to select the correct encoding, or select it when opening the file (in the open file dialog, or on the command line)
thiagokojiro: I do know.
kojiro: and I told you kdm can do that :-)
erm, I do know now.
srednamkl1525: also make sure that your font contains the characters in your document
rowHow do I get Kate to always open files in the default session?
actionthiago forgot the "now"
thiagoforgot the "now"
rowit always opens a new Kate :/
kojirothiago: I see it
thanks
Jucatorow: add the --use flag in the Kate entry in K Menu
?
srednarow: edit the command for kate to kate -u if you want to open files in an existing session
row: for command line you could use an alias
Jucato--use = -u right?
srednayes, Jucato
rowlike when I click open with in konqueror
