plasmawhere are the kernel config changes stored?
rickestplasma: I think you mean /usr/src/linux/.config
where linux is a softlink to /usr/src/linux-n.n.n-rn
rxKaffeeplasma: if you've installed a new kernel version, you can copy yor old .config to the new linux kernel source directory, and make oldconfig
plasmathx
seems it didnt change the kernel tho
yesterday i compiled
and then make && make install
rickestrxKaffee: lots of folks say you should only do that for same-version updates, not 2.6.17 to 2.6.18, for example
plasmabut the changes arent working
do i have to copy it manually?
rickestplasma: when it's done you need to copy it
plasmai mean make install should work
rxKaffeerickest: what would be the point in make oldconfig, rather than just make config in that case?
make install only installs for lilo, right?
plasmait even did the first time :)
rxKaffeeyou uese grub or lilo
plasmagrub
ajarxKaffee: It'll also copy the kernel to /boot, and if you set up a symlink, grub can use it.
rickestrxKaffee: their point would be that you shouldn't 'make oldconfig' in that case
rxKaffeerickest: so when is make oldconfig applicable?
[R]you ALWAYS run make oldconfig
rickestrxKaffee: -r3 to -r4
yes. yes, I do
[R]same version or differnet version
rickestsome people don't
gentoonoobi cant cd into /usr/src/linux help plz
ajarickest: I've never heard that advice, don't follow it, and wouldn't give it. Arguably, the config shouldn't be changing on -r5 to -r6, but likely will on 2.6.16 to 2.6.17, so the latter case is where make oldconfig would be useful.
