Artumimarienz the issue isnt booting, it's getting the installation media , i think?
marienzArtumi: if you have enough free unpartitioned space you can install from inside debian.
mattmattehmarienz, Artumi i think dsl is 2 floppies, and that would be the kernel, then it needs the cd after
Artumimarienz ok.
marienz i have enough free space.. but i dont have a cd with the files.. this is why i ask about floppies
kentinis it possible to virtualize it I use ubuntu 7.04?
JanisBdavid935, NO, before upgrade i HAS 4.1.1, THE SAME VERSION. I don't know why gentoo was tried to upgrade it
marienzArtumi: you can grab the stage tarball and everything else you need from the net. You don't need the official livecd or install media. They're not particularly important.
mattmattehArtumi, you have debian installed and running ?
Artumimattmatteh so without a cd burner id still be stuck?
matt, everything but the net , yes..
marienzArtumi: you really do want net access. As long as you have net access and a way to boot into some kind of linux, you're good. No need for official media as long as you have net access.
mattmattehArtumi, how hard will it be to get the network working >
?
Artumimarienz my usb modem doesnt work with the debian machine which has no usb
inxiis there a good display manager that doesn't require gnome or kde but which supports anti-aliased fonts?
Artumimattmatteh depends if i can find a networking solution that supports usb cable modems on machines with no usb?
or a way to use a pcmcia wireless card from either this machine or the debian one..
that would allow me to transfer the files.
marienzJanisB: it'd probably help if you put a bunch of info together in a pastebin, mainly what happens when you gcc-config, bits from an strace of gcc itself, and what version(s) of gcc you have installed
laynorGil, gentoo as a first distribution is not the easiest choice :) anyway there is great documentation around, where you can find safe cflags for your machine, and everything you need.
mattmattehArtumi, how many boxes ? and what is installed ?
Artumibut debian doesnt presently have the driver module .. groan
mattmatteh 2 boxes, 1 is openbsd + osx , 1 is debian
david935JanisB: Oh. :( I would get a binary package of an i686 4.1.1 and try to install that.
kentinis it possible to use gentoo with virtualbox because I'm using ubuntu 7.04 ?
mattmattehArtumi, and you want to install gentoo on the debain box while keeping debian >?
marienzArtumi: I'd consider using a different distro if the machine is not going to have reliable net access post install. gentoo is a bit awkward without net access.
JanisBdavid935, ok, i'll search for it
mattmattehkentin, if your cpu is less than a year old about, you can use xen i think. havent done it myself
JanisBmarienz, one momen, i'll create strace dump
laynorcan someone tell me which is the make target to build an initrd image?
marienzJanisB: /usr/bin/gcc is a binary managed through gcc-config. Finding a binpkg of gcc is not going to fix anything if it's /usr/bin/gcc that's broken instead of the actual gcc binary wrapped by it.
Artumimarienz gentoo has the devicer driver for the wireless available in gentoo-sources
marienzJanisB: you need to figure out what's actually broken, gcc-config or gcc or something else.
Artumimarienz so it should be as big a deal
mattmattehArtumi, ?
Artumionce i have the install..
kentinI already use XP with virtualbox for university
marienzArtumi: ok, that sounds reasonable then :)
