mattmattehtttt, didnt i tell you that a while ago ?
ttttmattmatteh: sorry, tell me what?
mattmattehtttt, your grub setting should be (hd0,2)
ttttit is
mattmatteh: i ran grub, root (hd0,0), setup (hd0)
mattmattehunknown block (2,0) was the kernel error ?
ttttmattmatteh: grub.conf has (hd0,2) and root=/dev/sda3
er
(hd0,0)
remastercrazy6: why wouldn't gentoo use system maps or initrd?
ttttyeah, it says kernel panic, VFS, can't open sda3 or unknown-block(2,0)
mjbjrcrazy6: afaik, if you know how to download the kernel tarball and make it, you should be good in any distro.
ttttlike it's missing a controller module
crazy6remaster: uh, becasue I have never had to deal with one in gentoo, as far as I know?
remastercrazy6: have you tried genkernel?
mattmattehtttt, do you have a boot partition ? (you said before, but dont recall)
ttttmattmatteh: yeah, /dev/sda1 is /boot, which is (hd0,0) in grub
mattmattehtttt, i am stumped with (2,0)
AmaNdoes anyone here know how can i make custom dekorator themes ?
crazy6hrm I better read up on what an initrd does / how to generate one
mattmattehtttt, its like there are 2 other boot devices before the hard drive
tttthda is the cdrom
mattmattehtttt, but necessarily bootable
ttttbut that's probably (hd1) if not probably nothing
any way to find if there are other drives/devices jacking up the hard drive to device #2?
mattmattehtttt, just to try.... maybe root (hd2,0) and see what happens. but i am kinda guessing with that
RiverRattttt: fdisk -l /dev/hda
mattmattehtttt, use grub tab completion
RiverRattttt: And check the BIOS settings
ttttRiverRat: macbook, no bios, and fdisk -l /dev/hda spun the cdrom, no table
crazy6hrm, there's no clever hackey way of taking the output of an lsmod on a working kernel and pipe that into a new kernel config so I don't have to laboriously go through all the options?
andrew[work].moo cow
ttttmattmatteh: yeah, i used tab completion, (hd<tab> showed only hd0,0 ,1 ,2
cahootcrazy2k: reuse your .config?
mattmattehtttt, hmm, not sure why there is 3. and if you specified hd0, why is it trying hd2 ? thats what i am stumped about
crazy6cahoot: I don't think a .config exists, as the kernel was installed from an RPM
doc|homecrazy6 enough, ask in your distro's channel please?
crazy6okey dokey
cahootcrazy2k: yes - I realized that after pressing enter
ttttmattmatteh: boot, swap, and root, that's three
