deepsaeregi, emerge -pv mysql will tell you the possible use flags. you can see what you want
mattmattehhow much fun is it helping someone when they dont listen, dont read the manual (or handbook) and think we are wrong......
crazy6if a distro is set up to use an initrd, can I just get a vanilla source package, build it with everything I need built-in and not use a .map or initrd ?
jmbsvicettomattmatteh / bssteph: He'll be back ;)
bsstephjmbsvicetto: heh, probably
mattmattehcrazy6, you dont usually need initrd, and can be left out. (sometimes its needed)
bsstephcrazy6: it depends on why they're using the initrd
eregideepsa, nope I wrote emerge -pv mysql and it gave me a option to decide, will I take dev-db/mysql or virtual/mysql ..
cavediverHi guys. I have a gentoo-system without mail working. What do I need to emerge ?
bsstephcrazy6: but in most cases, what mattmatteh said is right
deepsatake dev-db/mysql
mattmattehcrazy6, i think you need it when doing a diskless install, like a livecd
crazy6mattmatteh: hrm, ok, well, I've >usually< always used gentoo and not needed it; is it difficult to just emulate what the distro is doing and roll my own initrd ?
mattmattehcrazy6, or netboot
crazy6, i dont think i understand the question
crazy6er ok let me rephrase
can I just modularize everything ina vanilla kernel source, build, build modules, and do an mkinitrd with everything in it?
mattmattehcrazy6, how did you build your kernel you are using now ? i assume gentoo is installed now ?
crazy6mattmatteh: oh, sorry, I should clarify ; this is actually another distro, which I sort of have to use becasue I can't get this >one< package I need to build / run in gentoo; this other distro comes with it already installed
mjbjrcrazy6: which package is that?
StonefishSomeone remind me, how do I change which group owns a file?
mjbjrchgrp
mattmattehcrazy6, oh. asking support for another distro is probably not a good idea. but i suppose general kernel questions might be ok ? and as mjbjr asked, what package ?
doc|homecrazy6: you should ask in that distro's channel.
troxordoes anyone know how to get color in the $PROMPT_COMMAND variable, namely in the context of the gentoo wiki screen guide? the poster of that has a really good idea, but it would look nicer if the user@host could be colorized ;)
crazy6mattmatteh: well, I'm not asking for suport for another distro, really, its more of a fundamental linux questions, and the gentoo folks are always the most knowledgable
StonefishI've got a bunch of files that belong to the group "nobody". This is a problem.
mjbjrcrazy6: which package is it that you can't get running right in gentoo?
crazy6mattmatteh: answer I usually get are something like "well, you'll just have to learn to live without SMP" or "Well, sell the 3GB of RAM you can't use becasue your kernel doesnt support them"
eregideepsa, I did it yesterday, I emerged - emerge dev-db/mysql, But at the manual ( http://gentoo-wiki.com/MySQL/Install ) Is sayd that I need to get my version number, when I write emerge -pv mysql it says http://paste.php.lv/5399 But the mysql version doesnt show, I emerged with these - USE="cgi fastcgi -gdbm php -ldap -berkdb" useflags.
crazy6mjbjr: its called Salome Platform
mjbjr: its an open source FEM suite. I can get it half running, but I don't really know what I'm doing
mjbjrah
actionjmbsvicetto wanders off to bed
jmbsvicettowanders off to bed
crazy6mjbjr: if you want to download it and make it work via an easy ebuild, so I can just do emerge salome-platform, I'd be very grateful :)
mjbjrcrazy6: :)
ttttcan't open sda3 or unknown-block(2,0)
shouldn't that be (0,2)??
mjbjrcrazy6: not at this time, anyway.... I'm about to totally rebuild my gentoo system
crazy6mjbjr: there is something called CAELinux that has it pre-installed, but the thing is built on an ancient version of PCLinuxOS, which doesn't have SMP or highmem support, and it can't be added via apt. Maybe I can do it by building my own kernel from source, but I don't know quite how to do that because I've always used gentoo, which doesnt use system maps or initrd's
