ttttmattmatteh: from what i've read I can't use efi because I need another osx system to connect it to and i don't
Monkehcrazy6: If it's what I think it is, you probably run it through csh. I'd take a look first though.
bsstephtttt: mattmatteh: my understanding is if you aren't running OS X you can not concern yourself with it and just treat the macbook like generic hardware
mattmattehcrazy6, no idea. i use bash, and dont know if an app uses it
crazy6Monkeh: well, its part of an installer script
bsstephtttt: let me see if i can dig up some old stuff. at one point in time i had only gentoo on mine and it booted to grub just fine
ttttbssteph: ok, i didn't have the boot partition flagged bootable, but someone told me it doesn't need to be flagged bootable
crazy6Monkeh: its just going to recurse into a bunch of directories and build modules of this application
Monkeh: why on earth is csh masked?
mattmattehbssteph, you mean osx is needed ?
Monkehcrazy6: Apparently tcsh is compatible and better.
crazy6aha ok
mattmattehbssteph, forget that last post
RiverRatandrew[work]: And in the future please don't feed the trolls. mattmatteh did it right by informing us in #gentoo-ops.
ttttmattmatteh: they say i can install efi with a small HFS+ partition without osx
crazy6Monkeh: where'd you find that, for future reference? (is there a portage bible or something?)
jmbsvicettocrazy6: If you can choose between csh and tcsh, go for tcsh
Monkehcrazy6: It's in whatever file the package was masked in. Simply trying to emerge it (usually) displays the reason for the mask.
RiverRat: I poked jmbsvicetto, but he's slow :P
jmbsvicettoMonkeh: :P
bsstephtttt: <plug>have you tried the linux-only thing on the gentoo wiki page for the macbook?</plug>
RiverRatMonkeh: We were in PM and I was giving him some logs.
mattmattehtttt, might be what you need. no idea since i havent done it. only read about it a while ago
ttttbssteph: yeah, it's incomprehensible
mattmattehlol
jmbsvicettoMonkeh: man, I had my DSL breaking down and was talking with riverat :'(
bsstephtttt: yeah, the page is a mess :(
ttttbssteph: i am looking at it right now, but it says to make an HFS+ partition by booting from a second OSX system
bsstephtttt: where are you looking exactly?
Monkehtttt: Link me to it..
ttttlet me type it
bsstephtttt: oh, you're looking at refit / linux only
SamatrosCan anybody help me? I'm trying to emerge ffmpeg, but a program (cc1) complains that I have too many filenames.
ttttwww.gentoo-wiki.org/HARDWARE_Apple_MacBook#Installing_a_Bootloader
bssteph: yeah oops
bssteph: i didn't use mklabel
bsstephtttt: you can do just the linux-only system part. i can say for a fact that you can have your system with only gentoo, no refit, just grub. but i kind of did that by accident so i can't give you a precise method :)
greydruidhrmm so if i do an update world it tells me virtual/x11 is hard masked but from my understanding of the guide posted at the top that is just residual deps in the portage tree and not a misconfig on my part, right? (i have x11-base/xorg-x11-7.1)
Monkehtttt: That'd be because you can't format an HFS+ partition without an OS X system to do it.
ttttbssteph: your method of accident sounds like what I would do purposely
