Draconx|Laptopttt, the bootable flag does one thing: it tells the DOS boot loader to chainload that partition.
jmbsvicettoRiverRat: yes
HedgeMagejmbsvicetto: no, I haven't... is there a way to do it other than changing my make.profile and changing it back?
jmbsvicettoHedgeMage: No, just change make.conf
RiverRatHedgeMage: I had a really bad time w/ grub on my install. (2004.3) I ended up having to boot from a really old floppy and install it.
jmbsvicettoHedgeMage: or try running CFLAGS="" emerge -av grub
TTTDraconx|Laptop: just trying to get linux and nothing else installed on this macbook
HedgeMagejmbsvicetto, RiverRat: thanks
AlliedEnvyHi, I just updated udev, and after rebooting my system tells me "The Gentoo Linux system initalization scripts have detected that your system does not support UDEV"
I definitely have udev. I don't understand.
RiverRatHedgeMage: Basically from the floppy w/ root=harddisk and then it worked enough to install.
AlliedEnvy: Enable it in the kernel.
mattmattehttt, i think there are 2 different ways you can boot that. either efi + gtp + elilo or dos partition table + boot camp + grub/lilo
HedgeMageRiverRat: The CD boots fine... I can't boot from my HD
RiverRat: and don't have a floppy drive
(though I could use my other gentoo box to make a boot CD for this one, that would be a royal pita)
RiverRatHedgeMage: Yeah, my CD booted fine but refused to install grub to the HD. I had to use the floppy to get around that and then the HD booting was fine.
HedgeMagewow
weird
TTTmattmatteh: efi sounds better, i'm not installing osx on this thing just for bootcamp
actionHedgeMage can try a USB stick if neccessary
HedgeMagecan try a USB stick if neccessary
aterphasmausb bootsticks are great
AlliedEnvyRiverRat: I'll look, but I had udev working before I updated it, I haven't changed anything with my kernel.
mattmattehttt, osx doesnt matter
jmbsvicettoHedgeMage: That also works
actionHedgeMage goes to forage for a usbstick
HedgeMagegoes to forage for a usbstick
TTTmattmatteh: thought bootcamp had to be installed in osx
jmbsvicettoHedgeMage: Try emerging grub with empty CFLAGS before going to the usb stick
RiverRatHedgeMage: Another alternative might be to move the HD to a working machine and then write grub to the MBR and then move it back. I know, a PITA but its a thought.
mattmattehttt, but..... not sure if everything works if you use efi + gpt + elilo, i think some stuff like 3d might need dos emulation that the bios provides (guessing)
HedgeMageRiverRat: don't have any way to attach a lappy hd to a desktop, though
mattmattehttt, bootcamp will provide the x86 pc bios
TTTmattmatteh: can i get bootcamp from using the livecd/chroot?
RiverRatHedgeMage: They sell adapters @ newegg for a few dollars. If you open your boxes often it is worth them throwing it into the box on your next order.
mattmattehttt, where as new macs use the new firmware, no need for the ancient dos bios
RiverRatOther than that, I'm out of ideas. :(
mattmattehttt, you have to get boot camp from apple.
HedgeMageEmpty cflags worked!
mattmattehttt, how much reading up on this have you done
actionHedgeMage kisses jmbsvicetto
HedgeMagekisses jmbsvicetto
