RamblurrJB318: NTFS
JB318: would it be easier to create an image of the parition, and then mount it later on a loopback device and simply cp files back over?
phoenixxwhen merging svgalib, during make install, sandbox issues an access violation when installing anything with .ko in its name. Could this be because my kernel is all messed up? I am using vanilla-sources by the way
JB318Ramblurr: Then I wouldn't suspect any problems with files with holes... my best guess is the directory files, or the... drat, whatever that internal data structure was called that holds file information, that you can't defragment while Windows is running.
Ramblurr: What kind of usage has this filesystem seen?
kc8pxyI'm trying to build a gentoo box as my Wifi AP. I'm following the wiki howto. i do not yet have the wifi card. is there a card that is simple to set up, and commonly available??
phoenixxkc8pxy, I hear that Atheros cards are good for that stuff
JB318Ramblurr: Depends on your definition of "easy". I don't see why that wouldn't work, but I don't see why the tar wouldn't work either.
kc8pxyphoenixx: got a brand and model i should look for??
bsdfox_kc8pxy: get atheros
kc8pxy: AR5212A
phoenixxkc8pxy, no not really, just any Atheros card
bsdfox_A/B/G
Doomhammerportage uses /var for compiling things, right?
Draconx|LaptopDoomhammer, maybe
RamblurrJB318: It is not an old drive.. in use since last August. It is in a laptop so it has had frequent spinups/downs
kc8pxybsdfox_: is that i atheros a make?
Draconx|LaptopDoomhammer, it will put temporary files wherever you wish, /var/tmp by default.
bsdfox_what?
JB318Ramblurr: This was just an ordinary system for personal use? Surfing the Web, email, such?
Doomhammerwell no reason to change the default, afaik, i'm just wondering how big to make my /var partition - i'm figuring around 3GB, to compile X
bsdfox_atheros makes several wifi chipsets. the most common for desktops is the AR5212A
Draconx|LaptopDoomhammer, if you plan on compiling openoffice you need at least 5 gigs free on there.
DoomhammerDraconx|Laptop: jesus lol
RamblurrJB318: I'm a student, so homework, work etc. Personal stuff yes
bsdfox_and it is good, you could even use super-g mode I think (not sure if drivers support it or what)
harryy-dont think you realy need a var partition
JB318Ramblurr: No Apache site with a MySQL backend or anything?
RamblurrJB318: nope
JB318: I take that back. I don't know what i've been thinking this is an ext3 drive, not NTFS.
JB318: Sorry :\
JB318Ramblurr: Heh....
bsdfox_kc8pxy: if it helps, I have 4 wifi comps on my network and they all have 99.9% uptime on the connections. all of my cards and my wifi ap use atheros cards
JB318Ramblurr: Working on a one-liner here, hold on
bsdfox_kc8pxy: in fact it looks like only one comp has lost the connection in the last two months and it only happened like 3 times
Doomhammerso for a full desktop machine, my /usr partition should be pretty big, right? like maybe 20GB?
kc8pxybsdfox_: I'm setting this up for a client. they will be buying the card, and perhaps, tomorrow. i don't see atheros making cards from the website. what card is it you have??
bsdfox_kc8pxy: I have two AT&T cards (not sure of the model) and three d-link DWL-G520 (I think) cards. make sure you don't get the DWL-G520+ cause it uses a TI chipset that sucks
hang on I'll get the model for the d-links
kc8pxybsdfox_: thx.
