NY Lost Funds

[vern]I'm trying to get graphics acceleration working on my new gentoo install. I have an ATI X550. I'm following the howto at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=2&chap=1
I had to add a keyword to USE
AssociateXDraconx|Laptop, Ive only tested with the sticks already in the box
FunkyELFhow does a program set the title of a terminal? Like when I emerge something, the title of the terminal changes to something like emerging 1 of 3 blablabla
squidlywonderfull..
chithead: didnt work.. im going back to a statage 3 tarball
likewhoaFunkyELF: depends on the terminal
[vern]oops, that is actually at http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_AIGLX
it now instructs me to emerge --update --newuse world
FunkyELFlikewhoa, there isn't a standard way that would change 90 percent of the terminals out there?
[vern]when I do this I get xfce packages blocking the update to the new version of xfce-4.4.0 (from 4.2.3)
likewhoaFunkyELF: with aterm it's -title name
Draconx|LaptopAssociateX, I'd suggest running memtest in either case. Getting an error like that for both livecds and your disk install indicate a bigger problem.
[vern]just a sec while I paste the emerge output...
likewhoaFunkyELF: try -title, if not read the manual
chitheadsquidly: mabe it is enough to get the make.conf from the tarball
AssociateXDraconx|Laptop, should the memtest86 app on the knoppix cd throw up a big red screen a bad sign?
I did thqat too
FunkyELFlikewhoa, no...I'm saying if I wrote a program in C, how would I get that to change the terminal's title?
squidlychithead: are you tlaking about the / tarball or the portage tarball?
likewhoaFunkyELF: dunno with C
chitheadsquidly: the stage3 tarball
FunkyELFlikewhoa, how does emerge do it?
chitheadsquidly: not the portage snapshot
Draconx|LaptopAssociateX, try arranging the ram in the computer in different positions, leaving different ports empty, using only one of the sticks in various ports, etc.
FunkyELFbecause until I run emerge, it doesn't say "emerging 1 of 3"
likewhoaFunkyELF: look at emerge source
actionFunkyELF doesn't know any scripting languages
FunkyELFdoesn't know any scripting languages
AssociateXDraconx|Laptop, that memtest waas hard too read.
Draconx|LaptopAssociateX, big red screen is bad. Only time i've seen that was when one of my ram sticks was totally hosed and memtest failed verification of its own program.
likewhoaFunkyELF: more /usr/bin/emerge
squidlychithead: ill try that..
likewhoaAssociateX: new or old system giving you problems?
AssociateXDraconx|Laptop, ok, then I'm gopoin g to try to get some rqam tonight and try that
likewhoa, old system that just got move to ournew home
[vern]the emerge output is at http://dark-code.bulix.org/qoe93s-36948
Draconx|LaptopAssociateX, try the rearranging first, it is unlikely that more than one thing is broken in a particular way
AssociateXok
[vern]I would be fine with sticking with xfce-4.2.3, is there a way to make it do that?
AssociateXthanks for the help
