| brianw | rrrachel: you are not using the nvidia frame buffer are you? |
| Ralith | joebogarde, ln -s /path/to/kernel/source /usr/src/linux |
| ^h | hello world =\ |
| rrrachel | not as far as i know. nvidia-drivers won't emerge if it's enabled in kernel config, so i disabled it and rebuilt kernel and rebooted |
| brianw | joebogarde: you need to tell portage you are maintaining the source yourslef |
| _Marek_ | my HAL daemon script returns [!!] how do i find out what's going on? i dont know where to look for the actual error |
| Cheron | Is it possible to set different umasks for directories than for files, say on a vfat mount? |
| joebogarde | brianw been a while since I maintained gentoo on my machine I recall doing this a couple of years ago |
| rrrachel | confirmed: nvidia framebuffer support is not in the kernel |
| brianw | joebogarde: mkdir -p /etc/portage/profile/ && echo sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.19-r5 >> /etc/portage/profile/package.provided |
| ^h | does anybody know where I can find info on setting up freeside on gentoo? The instructions on the freeside website are quite generic and [seemingly] deliberately vague |
| _Marek_ | where do init.d scripts store their errors? (or do they?) |
| rrrachel | _Marek_: look for all such error logs in /var/log |
| ^h | does anybody use freeside on gentoo? |
| rrrachel | never heard of it hm wonder if there's anywhere to go that's better than this to ask for help |
| ^h | mostly it's a control app for isp type services written mostly in perl with a web frontend. |
| rrrachel | churn in this room is ludicrously distracting |
| ^h | slightly =/ |
| rrrachel | hm, no errors in the xorg logfile, just the oops in /var/log/messages and what looks like a register dump |
| _Marek_ | rrrachel, hm, can't find anything related... |
| lexs | puddingpimp_work: i didnt get it to work, but thanks anyway |
| v3trae | hey guys, where is the KDE startup folder? can't find it for the life of me no body knows? |
| ihad | v3trae: hmm, what's your prob? do you mean ~/.kde/Autostart ? |
| v3trae | ihad: yarr! ihad: there we go thank you |
| ihad | v3trae: np :) |
| ^h | all this churn leads me to wonder about the stability of the OS's that people are trying to switch to gentoo from ... =D |
| JunkMonkey | Is it possible to re-detect USB devices without rebooting? I'm SSH'd into my home machine and want to try and re-detect my USB mouse... Possible? |
| njsg | I've had to shutdown my computer, and now (after plugging it on again, of course) xsane is not able to detect the scanner if not run under root. I'm using the sane "net" driver and saned with xinetd. It was working yesterday. Any idea of places to look at? |
| TedKozma | hello, folks |
| sc0tch | Anyone familar with the Enlightenment window manager? (the irc channel for it is rather.. empty :) |
| JunkMonkey | Hi TedKozma! |
| njsg | hmm, nevermind that about xsane. it seems that Trust has, or had, something to do with Microsoft. I unplugged and plugged the scanner and it works now. |
| JunkMonkey | Not me sc0tch... :D Saw some cool videos of it on youtube though ;) |
| iMammal | I was running xorg fine on my iBook ppc and then after a reboot recently my framebuffer got all scary. like everything stays on the screen and nothning deletes anymore. Is there a name for this problem and what is the cause? |
| ^h | sc0tch: e16 or 17? |
| sc0tch | ^h 17 |
