| romanos | i know u gentoo chaps r the best geeks out there lol |
| Tefad | heh. |
| hyakuhei | romanos: rubbish, *BSD are way more geeky |
| romanos | so u might know much more than anyone else, apart cygwin chann |
| hyakuhei | besides, geeks dont use cygwin :P |
| romanos | some may do :P |
| Tefad | geeks-in-training do though |
| hyakuhei | Mattias: I'll have a look now |
| Tefad | i used it at work until i converted to SFU |
| salmonix | Hi there, I am running Gentoo on a 2001-TiBook ppc. I have alsa in the kernel, When I'm listening to some music and I open a new application - thus the system strarts to read from the hda - the music strats to get broken. I have to stop and start the tune again (but not the player or ALSA. Any suggestion? |
| romanos | Tefad, any good? |
| salmonix | (back again ... ) |
| dj-fu | salmonix: do not have alsa in the kernel, have alsa by package |
| hyakuhei | Mattias: obviously you have something that is depending on thunar, the questions is what and is it a flakey dep? try emerge -atv world... that will give you a better idea of whats going on |
| dj-fu | imo |
| Tefad | SFU is more efficient.. it will even run gimp. but it isn't well supported as a whole |
| salmonix | U mean if I use the powermac driver of ALSA-drivers would solve the problem? |
| Tefad | i run xterms via xming : ) |
| hyakuhei | salmonix: sounds to me like you may not have dma enabled for your harddisk (usually caused by a missing kernel module/element) |
| dj-fu | salmonix: no, I mean use the in-portage alsadrivers, not the in-kernel alsadrivers |
| Mattias | hyakuhei: removing bit by bit now :) ive had so much trouble on this gentoo install :) and ive done this a 100 times >,< first time with alot of problems, i noticed stage3 install for example is i386, and few stuff arent supporting that anymore so i had to recompile everything to i686 :) |
| salmonix | I have asked dma, and it shown that either dma is 1 (on), and unmaskirq is 1 (on) dj-fu, so I should try the portage drivers (of course,) Could U hint me the difference? I use kernel 2.6.19.2 |
| britishseapower | grub is cauasing me problems :-)....if i have 2 HDDs in my system, xp on hda and gentoo on hdb, do i do "grub-install --root-directory=/boot /dev/hda" it doesn't like it "/boot/boot" not found or not a block device? should i do maybe .. "grub-install --root-directory=/boot /dev/hdb" |
| cybane | Do stage3s have the needed distfiles in them already? I really do not feel like overwiritng all of them with Y |
| Mattias | atlast i got x up >,< |
| adeeln | any ideas why i'm getting errors in php saying ctype isn't installed, even though the use flag was set? |
| britishseapower | grub is cauasing me problems :-)....if i have 2 HDDs in my system, xp on hda and gentoo on hdb, do i do "grub-install --root-directory=/boot /dev/hda" its telling me it cant read table of mounted filesystem but hda is not mounted ? |
| adeeln | britishseapower: don't use the grub-install method britishseapower: use the manual grub install method..but i'm guessing the reason why it's not installing is because it can't find the grub file it needs on /dev/hda because it's winxp |
| britishseapower | adeeln: oh, ok, thanks adeeln: i'm using a printout of the install guide that's a little old |
| adeeln | britishseapower: no problem...but i think you're going to have to do some more stuff than just installing grub to get it all working |
| vocis | /ignore #gentoo ALL -PUBLIC -ACTIONS -TOPICS -NICKS -HILIGHTS so much better :) |
| Mattias | my alt key is broken :/ how can i fix it? |
