hkBstDLange: yeah, that's really annoying
kojirothere's nothing so wrong about emerge -e world that it implies a rebuild is needed
zlinedoardo|office: why on earth do you think that downgrading to something completely unsupported both up- and downstream will fix your problem?
DLangehkBst: I'll bump it in bugs.g.o
ChrisGokojiro your telling me if you make a system with -march=pentium2 for example then you change it and do a full emerge world you wont have any left over files or possible issues?
edoardo|officezlin, well how about 6.x shows graphics while 7.x don't at all? and how about people work on this computer and can't wait till i solve the issue?
zlinedoardo|office: describe your original problem better and provide real errors output..
wd3uh oh guys i'm sorry.. don't fight..
TFKylekojiro: doesn't an emerge -e world imply a rebuild?
ChrisGoI mean it only takes an hour to reinstall getting the latest and greatest whats easier to me I guess is the reinstall cause i have backups
kojiroTFKyle: distinguished from a complete reinstall
TFKyleah
yeah, I have to agree then
CroolWhat's the difference between -R and -a ?
kubrickhi
zlinedoardo|office: support for virtual/x11 is being removed from ebuilds now so monolithic X is no longer an option.
TFKyleunless you're wanting to cleanup non-needed packages you've got in your world and are too lazy to go through them
kojiroChrisGo: yes, I would not have any loose ends. If I did, I would know how to fix them. If I didn't know how to fix them, I would have a reasonable assurance of running across the same problem in a complete reinstall.
uberpinguinCrool: the man page contains the solutions to many mysteries.
TFKyle(or want to change your harddrive layout, etc.)
kojiroor if you want to change your CHOST...
kubrickI want to create a ramdisk for storing some logs in it, I'd like to mount /var/log/mylogs there, which kind of ramdisk do you suggest me? the generic ramdisk support that comes into the kernel ?
wd3kojiro: so ur saying to emerge -e world, "meaning to rebuild" all apps to reflect the PIII changes in kernel and cflags is better and easier?
ChrisGowell I wont be changing my -march setting anytime soon :)
kojirowd3: it's better than a complete reinstall, yes. It's not really necessary though
edoardo|officezlin, dude, i didn't wanna be aggressive, but this issue occured some time ago and can't recall what the errors were. the point is a secretary that works on this box came in the office in the mornin' and 7.x didn't boot up, so i tried downgradin' which worked before but didn't that time, so i did... oh well it was the way i could think of to let the secretary used the box. i did cd /; tar jxvf xorg-x11-6.8.9-r2.tbz2. so now gentoo thi
nks i've got 7.x but i overwrote it with 6.x
ChrisGowd3: he also said he knows what hes doing and can manually clean up if needed
RavenlostHello. I have a problem... when connected to my Gentoo box at home via SSH, after a while.. I'll randomly just lose my ssh connection. Dunno why. Didn't notice any patterns.. Could anyone suggest anything? Thx.
kojiroedoardo|office: that's really broken. Do you have backups?
wd3kojiro: that's what oneshot is right?
ChrisGo: ok
kojiroedoardo|office: ie. quickpkgs would be nice here.
ChrisGoI agree why change it now wd3 if things are working dont break it. I like reinstalling cause I learn more new things and gert faster
edoardo|officekojiro, i've got'em. both of 6.x and 7.x
kojirowd3: oneshot is?
wd3: I don't understand the question. 'oneshot' is an emerge flag
wd3kojiro: i was told it was a reemerge of all apps. sorry.
TFKylekojiro: oneshot tells emerge not to record the specified package in your worldfile when it's done merging, you obviously know that already though
kojiroedoardo|office: are they in PKGDIR so portage can use them?
