naabNeed help please: When I fireup the portage with commando: # tar xvjf /mnt/gentoo/portage-latest.tar.bz2 -C /mnt/gentoo/usr
wootcakescorrection
sry, correction 4.0.4
naabIt gives an error back
this way I can't install portage
wootcakeswhy would I replace gcc in FreeBSD? it's the one that goes fast.
iglibugs.g.o is normally quite quick to give you an initial response, even if it's not what you wanted :)
CareBear\wootcakes : You could even experiment with using the BSD compiler and binutils on your gentoo.
wootcakesgentoo is the one I tried 3 different generations of gcc with
CareBear\wootcakes : The other way around of course.
wootcakesI think it's portage.
CareBear\wootcakes : As you probably know, gcc and binutils are really complex.
mmm_wootcakes: maybe give paludis a shot?
iglipkgcore is nice
wootcakesCareBear\, fully aware. I've tried changing variables across the board. virtually zero change other than a minor speed increase (compilation wise) in reverting to gcc3
CareBear\wootcakes : I'm sorry, but I think that's silly. Portage is an administrative tool.. It doesn't take part in any compilation, it just sets it up. :)
wootcakesI think it is systemic to portage
lbleoigli: relax friend. i hope, god mercy your kids. How many kids?
soppmanhi..
wootcakesit doesn't add up to me, but I takes em as I sees em
soppmanany news on alsa?! i did emerge -u world and now all my sound died
mmm_hi, trying to set up my wireless network with wpa_supplicant. I'm able to get an IP from my wireless router and I show up in the DHCP client list, but I can't access the network or internet. any ideas?
lbleoigli: i haven't a account on gentoo.org. Still waiting for a comfirmation mail to create an account.
CareBear\wootcakes : There's an easy way for you to rule it out. Grab the something source tarball and configure/build manually on both systems.
lbleo*bugs.gentoo.org
wootcakesCareBear\, I don't have the time or patience.
right now. anyways.
CareBear\wootcakes : It will show the same difference in performance as when using each system's package management system.
wootcakesI know.
I am thinking about plugging bsd ports onto a linux system
and seeing what happens
I like the linux kernel and general "environ" better, but bsd ports are sexy
CareBear\wootcakes : Those last two statements do not make sense together, but go ahead and try ports on Linux. :) It'll probably take a lot of time though.
kAworuwootcakes: what has ports that portage does not have ?
SPOPPO??
CareBear\wootcakes : So go for BSD. :) Personally I'm interested in BSD only because of the kernel.
wootcakeskAworu, long story, read above.
nothlitwootcakes: see crux linux
wootcakesCareBear\, I'm a speed nut. I can compensate for speed > stability/security decisions through "best practices"
kAworuwootcakes: was not here :P
