zlinxerophyte: maybe you just ran out of space on the drive ?
xerophytezlin, i am building on /home/username it has around 55GB free
euphor][axerophyte: I think you need to update your system somewhere
using latest stable version of system should build a kernel
dalfzis it possible to tcpdump a pid to see what it does?
rkrush_v2Okay, maybe I'm missing something here. I have intelfb driver compiled and it shows up during boot. /proc/fb shows the correct FB, fbset --show displays the mode like it should be, but I still get the same old 80x25 text console.
zlinxerophyte: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel/449823 seems to imply that upgrading binutils should help
larrythecowI'm just wondering, if I have a hd1 (30gb) for Windows only (at the moment) which I keep if a computer illiterate needs my computer or something (mostly because I had an extra hd and a copy of windows). Anyway, if I have that and it has the mbr, then I have gentoo as sdb1,2 and 3 (second hd) and I make an extended and plan to put in fedora and myah os (but I won't until after I install grub).. how should I lay it out?
rkrush_v2Any ideas what I am missing?
Do I need to somehow "enable" VESA mode?
larrythecowGrub goes on HD2 (sdb) where Gentoo lives.. yeah? And I make it so grub loads gentoo kernel by default as hd 1,3 and then windows is .. what do I do for its kernel? hd 0, 1. Fedora would say be.. do the numbers change in an extended partition?
Just know that it is not me who uses the fedora! :P.
Basically, I don't how the grub numbering system works for extended partitions.
bloggsieplease could someone tell me where to look for doco to build the scaffolding files for a local ebuild? Tnx a 10^6
larrythecowlol thanks a 10^6.
DrEeevilbloggsie: just look at some ebuilds in /usr/portage, feel free to join #gentoo-dev-help
larrythecow: grub should be on the first disk, usually numbering starts at 0, so second disk is hd1
larrythecow: partitions are what fdisk shows -1 usually
bloggsieDrEeevil: I need to generate the Manifest and the digest files. Any ideas?
larrythecowbut if it goes on the first disk it overwrites mbr, so oneday if I ever feel like crashing then I won't be able to get into windows?
DrEeevilbloggsie: ebuild $file digest
bloggsieThat do the Manifest too?
DrEeevillarrythecow: can restore the windows MBR, and grub usually works even if it's a bit knackered
bloggsie: should
bloggsieDrEeevil: tnx a 10^6
bye
larrythecowSo what, I install grub over mbr and then restore windows mbr... but then grub would be gone?
DrEeevilyes
but you can regenerate grub easily
larrythecowAnd then I'd die because windows doesn't have a driver for my wifi card so I would be internetless :(
InsolenceAhh, lovely sleepless nights. ;) Whats up guys?
larrythecowInsolence: well I'm trying to learn the inner workings of grub :P
InsolenceAHh yeah I kinda caught the tail end of that just now. :) What for? :)
larrythecowjust so I don't get any bumps tonight when I have enough bandwith to download the gentoo kernel and finish off the install.
InsolenceHmm. :) Ok. ;) Had a lot of trouble in the past or something larry?
sleeplessInsolence: lots of sleepless night :p
InsolenceHaha, nice name,l ol!
I've _never_ really had troubles except for this one HP server a few nights ago is incompatible (that I can tell) with grub and have had to use lilo instead. ;) Larry: I'd just say don't forget lilo exists to fall back on. :P That's all, hehe
larrythecowyou bet! I got half way through a networkless install, then the guide just stops explaining how to do things without a network and assumes by then you got connected, so that killed me. I moved my computer over to an access point but then my brother downloaded a huge game and now I can't do anything more bandwith consuming then irc unless at midnight.
so I'm sort of paranoid I'll have trouble with grub.
