zlinhmm
marienzzlin: after which you have a ton of orphaned stuff installed.
zlin: the trick is figuring out what of the orphans to add back to world.
MeowCatsmarienz, I'd like to try gnome-light as well. Is it possible to remove gnome? I tried unmerging gnome but it doesn't work
marienzMeowCats: it did work :)
MeowCats: it just doesn't do what you think it should do
JackieRipperMeowCats: emerge -C gnome will not *really* uninstall gnome, it will remove the meta-package that has all the bits of gnome as dependencies, making the system think those bits are unnecessary
kepstinMeowCats, unmerge gnome, emerge gnome-light, and do a depclean to do what you want to do.
zlinmarienz: yeah, I get it now (the problem).
marienzMeowCats: if you run that depclean without -p it'll give you gnome-light. It'll just leave you with (probably) way less of gnome than you want instead of way more.
MeowCatskepstin, it doesn't unmerge gnome, it says it's not a package
marienzMeowCats: you already did unmerge it a little while ago.
MeowCats: I asked you to :)
zlinI'd usually recommend just editing the world file manually until --depclean report a desired result..
MeowCatsjackieripper, I want to completely remove gnome, as if I never installed it
marienzzlin: well, if you merge gnome, then switch to gnome-light, then depclean, the result is rather huge.
JackieRipperemerge -C gnome ; emerge ==depclean
kepstinMeowCats, to remove all of the other pieces, you need to run emerge --depvclean
JackieRippersorry
kepstindepclean*
JackieRipperemerge -C gnome ; emerge --depclean
marienzzlin: huge enough that MeowCats (understandably) prefers not to sort through the lot by hand.
MeowCatsmarienz, ummm, well if I run that command won't it just install gnome-light? but my harddrive will still have all those gnome(full) in it
marienzJackieRipper: you missed "emerge gnome-light"
JackieRippermarienz: he said, "jackieripper, I want to completely remove gnome, as if I never installed it"
marienzMeowCats: neither the gnome-light nor the gnome "package" contain any files.
JackieRipper: oh, sorry.
CeIIGuys, is there any rescue stage aviable when whole system is broken ? :)
DarkMorphanyone know how to use mencoder to make a video identical except slow-mo? e.g. I can run mplayer and tap [ to reduce playback speed but I want the actual video to be slow instead of just changing how the original is played back; man mencoder, I can't find anything there
marienzMeowCats: if you unmerge gnome, then emerge gnome-light, then emerge --depclean, it'll remove all the packages that gnome depends on that gnome-light doesn't also depend on.
[R]DarkMorph: #mplayer
zlinmarienz: so what you need to create is something that takes the list of orhpaned packages and searches for packages that have no orphaned revdep. :)
MeowCatsmarienz, ok, so just do emerge gnome-light, and then emerge --depclean and I should be set?
marienzMeowCats: you should be set to start remerging stuff you need. I have one thing I'd like you to try first though:
MeowCats: unmerge gnome-light, emerge gnome, then run:
meowcats: pquery --vdb --one-attr rdepends gnome-base/gnome|sed -e 's/ /\n/g'|grep -v '!' |xargs pquery -v --vdb
JackieRipperMeowCats: if you want to get rid of gnome and all its glory: emerge -C gnome ; emerge --depclean If on the other hand, you want a kinder, gentler (smaller) gnome: emerge -C gnome ; emerge gnome-light ; emerge --depclean
marienzMeowCats: oh, emerge pkgcore before doing that
MeowCats: that'll give you a verbose description of everything that gnome depends on. You may want to add some of those to world before doing that depclean.
zlin: I want to do slightly more than that: I want it to show the depgraph for the orphans. I don't think showing just the leaves is sufficient.
