marienz[R]: used to get myself booted by genbot because of "failure to breathe when speaking" with that one :)
[R]hehe
ryanakcaoops, tabbing mess up
marienzMeowCats: no, that's gdm.
ryanakcaAndyCR1, fresh install, stage 3
AndyCR1ryanakca: on my syste, 1gb of ram athlon 64 4000+, it was about 4-6 hours for gnome, 10-20 mins for kernel with genkernel, and an hour and a half for x
marienzMeowCats: can you survive with full gnome for a couple more days :)
peksterryanakca: Most of the install process is hands-on through the handbook, but when you finish and are ready to update your system or such, do that one before work or bed or such, because it can take a bit depending on your packages and how much needs updating, or if you asked for extra packages (like the graphical xorg environment)
AndyCR1ryanakca: add the time for typing commands and you get about 12 hours
marienzMeowCats: you're motivating me a lot with this, shouldn't be impossible to add some form of revdeps to pkgcore that'd help you out here.
AndyCR1assuming you are very effecient at typing and get the commands right
MeowCatsmarienz, of course, but what do you exactly want to do? build some app to do just that? remove things gnome apps?
ryanakcaThanks, well, I used the GTK installer :)
AndyCR1for me, i got to the point of gnome and did it overnight
actionryanakca beds in hopes of comming back to a nice gentoo install
ryanakcabeds in hopes of comming back to a nice gentoo install
AndyCR1ryanakca: oh. uh oh. that might be a problem. its very badly broken.
JackieRippergtk installer? heresy! ;)
marienzMeowCats: improve pkgcore's depclean equivalent to do something like -t and/or grow revdeps on unmerge
ryanakcalol
actionryanakca pets killall
ryanakcapets killall
AndyCR1ryanakca: i woldnt give much hope to ever updating your system successfully with it
warriomessHey all. How good is AirPort Extreme support in Gentoo? Are the drivers built-in/modules to the kernel, or do you need to do some painstaking configuration?
AndyCR1the cli install really is the way to go
nondysjunctionheya
ryanakcaAndyCR1, GTK installer to fresh install? why would I use it to update?
AndyCR1, yeah
kojiroAndyCR1: you ain't just whistlin' Dixie
MeowCatsmarienz, um alrighty, just make sure you add more than just cups/evo :) it would be really cool if you could make it get rid of the administration stuff, cd burners, ect.. all that
AndyCR1ryanakca: nono, i meant that if you ever want to update any package, youll have a really fun time
nondysjunctionI am trying to use the ifs driver to read ext3 from windows. Windows can't seem to see the ext partition (or any partitions on the drive which linux is installed) Any suggestions?
actionryanakca gulps and wonders if installing gentoo on his production machine was really that great an idea
ryanakcagulps and wonders if installing gentoo on his production machine was really that great an idea
marienzMeowCats: I'm not writing anything gnome-specific, just trying to think up something depclean-like with more readable output about why it wants to unmerge stuff.
AndyCR1ryanakca: i installed it on my two production machines, its a great os, if done properly
actionryanakca should've stolen his mom's comp and tested gentoo on it :)
ryanakcashould've stolen his mom's comp and tested gentoo on it :)
MeowCatsmarienz, well as long as I'll be able to remove all those things :D
AndyCR1if not....... its as capable of throwing tantrums as any self respecting os
ryanakcaandatche, yeah... hmm... what do I do now? let it install and hope for the best? cancel the install somehow?
peksterryanakca: Gentoo's a nice distribution, but it requires maintenance (updates and such, including updating config files) to function correctly, and the handbook install (the "manual" CLI one) is really the proper approach to teach you the tools you need to maintain your system
JackieRippermarienz: to be truly useful, it would have to keep track of why it was pulled in as a dep to begin with
AndyCR1pekster: yep
