Mercesteswe had a bout a billion .wav files in one dir and trying to process those fsck'd my file system.
marienztardo[lt]: gentoo's init scripts require bash, yes.
sub_hi, can someone tell me whats the highest resolution possible with the radeon xorg driver? Id like to have 1680x1050, but that doesnt seem to be supported (Radeon 9600) :( hint, anyone?
tardo[lt]marienz: what calls the scripts?
I'd like to eliminate one or the other
marienztardo[lt]: sysvinit calls /sbin/rc which calls stuff in /etc/init.d/
Mercestestardo[lt]: might I suggest against removing bash? I just did it. it's not pretty.
tardo[lt]sysvinit is run automagically once the kernel loads?
marienztardo[lt]: sysvinit being /sbin/init, configured through /etc/inittab
tardo[lt]ah
replace bash with what?
reisiomercestes: process?
marienztardo[lt]: yeah, kernel defaults to starting /sbin/init (and a few other things which don't exist or are checked after /sbin/init)
cybaneexit
tardo[lt]so /sbin/init read /etc/inittab... now to downsize that
so why not bash mercestes?
marienztardo[lt]: you might want to add an "init=/path/to/something" argument to your boot loader's kernel line.
Mercestesreisio: process? oh, as best I can tell, you unstage a stage3 over your partition about 20 times with random emerge --syncs and emerge --world thrown in for fun and then boot off of it and try to emerge --sync and emerge portage
reisiomercestes: I was talking about the billion .wav files processing
mercestes: how were you processing them?
Mercestesreisio: Not that that's what I did (intentionally) but we're thinking I did something along those lines in my mad flight to try and fix this box.
reisio: processing what?
marienztardo[lt]: that'll cause it to start that instead of /sbin/init. I'm not sure what you're trying to do, but if it involves embedding that may be a nice way to run a busybox-friendly custom script instead of the normal init system.
reisiomercestes: ...
Candidwhy does it take sooo long here to calculate the dependencies in emerge? on other computers (slower) its way faster. here it calculates the dependencies of an emerge vlc now for 10 minutes
Mercestesreisio: oh..LS
reisio: ls and tar and scp's. Just trying to move them and manage them.
reisiomercestes: ah :/
hliebermantardo[lt], #gentoo-embedded might know specifics.
ghostxIs there a way to have the boot process load a keymap prior to the Control-D for maintenance prompt or can I change the compiled-in kernel keymap?
marienztardo[lt]: keep in mind that /sbin/init is also what gives you the standard login processes running on a bunch of vcs though. If you still want those telling init to run your script instead of /sbin/rc might work better.
tardo[lt]marienz: thanks, let me try that. It still won't load my module though. Gonna try a new kernel
marienztardo[lt]: depends on what you're trying to do :)
Mercestesreisio: I finally managed to get winscp to do the job. CLI just wasn't happy with them.
tardo[lt]eh too many peopple talking to me at once :x
here's what i'm working
Mercestesreisio: I'm thinking a WM might have saved me some pain too.
marienzCandid: invalid cache is likely.
tardo[lt]i need to put gentoo on ThinClient with only 64mb space
marienzCandid: try running "emerge metadata" then trying again.
