PeterFAloki_val, it's on it's own 40 gigger.

cassiopeaHey. I'm trying to find out whether I can use the gentoo minimal install livecd to fix my mbr - it was overwritten when I installed windows - on my sata hard disk (requires sata_sil kernel module). Is this possible?
serenan anyone explain the differences between using xinerama and not, i have doth monitors working, my understanding is that with xinerama i can log the other session under a different wm/de is this correct?
s/doth/both
timmucassiopea: should be
loki_valPeterFA: Then the only way to find out is to du -s -h your way through the filesystem. Start in / and work your way through. In my experience, a fully working KDE desktop needs about 15G on an ext3. Less on Reiser.
timmucassiopea: boot up, mount your system, chroot into it and fix it
cassiopea: grub or lilo or whatever you use..
cassiopeatimmu is there a way to be ABSOLUTELY certain that 2006.0 does have the sata_sil kernel module?
PeterFAloki_val, aye.
timmucassiopea: yes, try it :)
PeterFAloki_val, what if I have residue from previous versions of KDE?
serencassiopea: figure what kernel version it uses
writerz_SaLuT A tOuS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
inzanezhm...strange: "ps aux" and "top" report that 27% of memory is used by vmware, there are 3 processes more with 4% memory,...but "free" shows that from my total 2GB only 60MB are actually free??...how can this be?
cassiopeaseren, well, I've used kernel 2.6.7 on a ubuntu livecd, but that one doesn't recognise my hardware
loki_valPeterFA: How old is this installation? Normally portage doesn't leave much residue.
zerrez-dikuloki_val, okay
serencassiopea: 2006.0 uses 2.6.16 afik
zerrez-dikuloki_val, im just used to running the stable ones :)
writerz_bon personne d'interessant j'me casse
timmuinzanez: filesystem cache?
inzanez: look at top buffers + cached values
loki_valzerres-diku: .20 is stable. At least it's stabl*er* for SMP systems.
cassiopeatimmu I'm not gonna be able to download another one. If this doesn't work, I won't be able to use linux again for a long time
PeterFAloki_val, I think I have an issue with slots, but emerge -c doesn't report anything. If Portage is used correctly, it's pretty clean. However, I wasn't always the uber 1337 Gentooer I am now.
timmucassiopea: what live cd did you use to install?
PeterFAloki_val, by that I mean I have had issues in attempt to uninstall previous versions of KDE.
serenPeterFA: you mean emerge -C? or emerge -P for prune
PeterFAloki_val, in time, my system has swelled.
loki_valPeterFA: that might explain stuff.
PeterFAseren, lemme take a look at those options.
inzaneztimmu: yes, there are many xfs processes,...is there a way to prevent this from happening? I mean,...the system is very slow now,...not funny :)
cassiopeatimmu it was either 2006.0 or 2006.1, but I seem to have lost the iso image, so I need to redownload it, and I'm under immense restrictions right now, considering my internet usage
timmucassiopea: i haven't noticed any kernel differences between mini/large cd's
serensame kernel
timmucassiopea: if it worked then, there are pretty good odds, that it works now too..
cassiopeatimmu is there a difference between the 2006.0 and the 2006.1 kernel?
seren2yes
