sleek`VL: basically, the file server is linux. i need to share a data partition to both windows and linux clients
bluerabbitsleek, samba is then the best choice
the_iszkojiro: i just see that i have the pam use flag enabled for xdm. could that be the problem?
sleekok
ithiumhi, I'm having problems with mke2fs. For some reason it insists on using all of my available RAM. I have 4Gb RAM and it is able to make filesystems but watching top i can see it all being used up... then, when I boot as a Xen dom0 and limit my RAM to 256Mb, mke2fs quickly uses it all up and causes the system to pretty much crash - "out of memory" warnings, programs being killed with a vengeance, that kinda thing. And mke2fs won't complete making th
kojirothe_isz: not that I know of. Can I see /var/log/Xorg.0.log in a pastebin?
jeegerhey. Which signal can i send to programs to tell them to gracefully shut down?
simcop2387yay! almost took a whole week to get done but i've finished my first emerge -Dvu world in a year!
`VLjeeger: normally kill PID should work
Robstafariansimcop2387: have you run revdep-rebuild?
the_iszkojiro: ahm... i would really like to do that. but to be honest: i don't know how to give you that information from console :)
jeegeryeah but that's not graceful enough for amarok. It forgets all the settings, i.e. last song played, playlist and so on.
`VLjeeger: man kill for list of signals
kojirothe_isz: emerge nopaste, nopaste /var/log/Xorg.0.log
simcop2387Robstafarian: not yet, but the emerge -Dvu world finished!
`VLjeeger: what for do you need it? maybe you want to use DCOP feature for KDE apps ?
BoohbahRobstafarian: with --newuse also? have you changed any USE flags?
Robstafariansimcop2387: heh, that's only half the battle
jeeger@ `VL Good idea
SolifugusWhy would my kernel want to boot over nfs... (used grub: kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/sda3)
simcop2387Robstafarian: at the moment i'm fixing a few kernel modules that got broken when i rebuilt my kernel with a newer gcc (was using 3.4 before, now i built it using 4.1)
RobstafarianBoohbah: haven't tried -N, I wasn't going to bother with it, the only USE flag change was adding "sound" and "sounds"
leftStandinghi all, i've ran into a difficulty with portage, i added gd to my list of use flags, and am trying the emerge --update world command but now theres a 'multiple packages, single slot" problem, i've tried masking the 2 earlier versions it complained about, as well as updating gd to the latest version, but so far that message keeps appearing when i try to emerge graphiz, any ideas?
RobstafarianBoohbah: which only affect one package on the 'emerge world' list
`VLSolifugus: maybe it`s worth to check initrd?
Robstafariansimcop2387: did you build the new GCC as part of that update?
andreikojiro: ok second emerge world did basically nothing
Death_Sargenthow do i unmask pakages
kojiroAndrei: emerge -uDN world?
sleekbluerabbit: is there any advantage to having both NFS and Samba both enabled on the file server? i need to have very fast responses and it needs to be stable
andreikojiro: ye
simcop2387Robstafarian: no, did that before the emerge -u world, so that i could sort out issues with it first
kAworuDeath_Sargent: use /etc/portage/package.unmask
kojiroAndrei: that's not correct, you must've not typed the exact command I gave you.
`VLDeath_Sargent: see portage manual.. use /etc/portage/package.unmask
andreikojiro: well i forgot to tell u but before the first emerge i disabled java and doc in make.conf
Solifugus`VL: I am not using initrd.. I built a kernel with my i2o driver build in..
kojiroAndrei: and cups?
andreiand then i did USE="-cups" emerge -uDN world
and now emerge -uDN world with cups on
