utrrrongeebI'm using Etch, and some Xfce4 panel applets aren't working.
udosI want to modify the environment that things like kdm get srated in
started
not just kdm but that's an example
Vasisthaudos: oh, maybe you want to source a special one on boot, and put it in your init scripts
udosVasistha: I know that
I want to modify just one file
Azarassasukasse: debian is leaning toward a real quality operating system and new users are to learn administering it or quit. Ubuntu is less about system stability, more for "latest" packages buggy or not, and the ease of gui point/click witout forcing the users to read much
udosnot everything in /etc/init.d
yettenetutrrrongeeb: Which apps?
assasukasseAzar: what about mandriva then :D a bunch of gui tools with a system that is impossible to upgrade and very DAMN very buggy? :D
Azarassasukasse: never used mandriva..
utrrrongeebyettenet: Generic Monitor. And a Disk Performance one. There's a few others, too.
yettenetutrrrongeeb: I'm gonna give them a look :P
utrrrongeebyettenet: Try Generic Monitor, and set it up to run time or date.
Azarassasukasse: with each new release, I feel sorry to leave the "old stable" since it works so good - never breaks (speaking of Debian ofcourse)
assasukasseAzar: i used many distro, started with redhat 6...thank god, now i don't have to fiddle with rpm
yettenetutrrrongeeb: I don't have it installed :P
TiGZI can't wait to throw mac os 9 out the door :)
assasukasseAzar: another thing i don't like in ubuntu is they drop support after 18 months..
TiGZAnd put debian on my old, worn out mac
yettenetutrrrongeeb: I'll pass it
utrrrongeebyettenet: I'm using Etch. What are you on?
Vasisthaudos: it sounds like what you want is for the init process to source a file with your vars
yettenetutrrrongeeb: The same
utrrrongeeb: Etch/xfce4
udosVasistha: yes
so that every app and spawned app (not just a shell) is modifed by thos settings
yettenetutrrrongeeb: HAve you tried to google it?
Azarassasukasse: not wanting to criticize any other distro: I picked and sticked with Debian because I needed to get a basic knowledge in effectively and efficiently administering my system. All I learned here makes sense, and works.
VasisthaI wonder if rc.local, etc., is sourced by init, or if it's run as a seperate process... hmm. interesting questions here
udosI discovered that was, for example, why my ODBC connections would work from command line but not from OpenOffice
Azarmaybe other distros are working ok but not delivering the education for their users. For free ofcourse :)
assasukasseAzar: when is started to look at linux, i didn't know there was a debian, there was only a redhat, however because that i was away from linux for years..
nhuismanredhat can die on fire for servers
debians package manager is way better
ronrI'm trying to install openoffice on an unstable debian box, it fails on dictionary-common with: No alternatives for ispell-dictionary.hash. anyone a clue how to fix this?
udosVasistha: I thought it would be at least as easy as it is to do in NT ;P
Vasisthaudos: well, wait a second. now you're talking about gui stuff. do you need this only in the gui?
udosno
