enoufhumbolto: even the mdadm stuffs .. do a dumpe2fs -h /dev/sdXX from livecd as well to see perhaps some block or superblock borkage , if it's even possible
naitrameeyore: the original question was how to back up a single machine manually, just really looking for software choices figured tar was clunkiest way and that someone knew of packages to do it more easily. New to linux, hence my appearance here. Thanks
