roland_maybe i need to use another dns package
wolsowh: probably. always hard to tell. give him a knoppix CD too
owhwols: And I gave him a Feisty also :)
iKernel4.0 is etch, right?
wolspeterS: I nevre ever buy via again. if I want budget, I go SIS
cydorkiKernel: yes.
iKernelthakns
foowols: I see. So ECS may be ok after all.
owhwols: Thanks for your help.
cydorkwols: i was actully thinking about buy that nano-itx by via :P
wolsowh: boot from netinst and tell it to use the debian install via kernel boot parameter. or maybe boot into single user mode with it
cydork: itx are sort of specialty embedded hardware
peterSroland_: well, my working local DNS setup: http://p12n.org/tmp/my_named.conf
owhwols: You mean by typing "rescue" at the boot prompt?
cydorkwols: yeah i was thinking for a car pc :)
peterSroland_: just for your reference
it's not too different from yours - neither one of us has modified very many things from the default
wolsowh: for example, yes. dunno if etch has "rescue" anymore tho
peterSroland_: are you using the 'bind' package or the 'bind9' package? I'm using bind9
owhwols: The docs seem to say so.
wolsowh: good. sarge didn't iirc
owhwols: Yeah, it's a bit hard to make out, the docs seems to flow freely between the two versions :)
wolscydork: I wish I could afford one of those IRX AM2 boards. noew those look yummy
peterSyeah, installation manuals are not rewritten from scratch every release, but just updated as needed, so obviously not everything will be equally up to date at any given time (:
(though people do try to go through them and make sure things are ok)
wolsthe old linux problem: docs ;)
actionowh grumbles about not supporting dist-upgrade under his breath.
owhgrumbles about not supporting dist-upgrade under his breath.
cydorkwols: ooh that is nice :)
actionowh takes a deep breath.
owhtakes a deep breath.
Thanks all.
wolscydork: no price announced yet... guess why :)
cydorkwols: why?
wolsalbatron is making one if you haven't found it yet
peterSowh: yeah, the breakage of dist-upgrade from sarge -> etch is a bug that nobody quite expected, and nobody noticed it until too late (the release was too close)
wolsvia itx isn't cheap with their shitty little C7 cpus. now guess how much a AM2 one will cost
owhpeterS: I understand that things break, but the challenge is that there was no way to avoid it. People will keep hitting the problem over and over again.
peterS: When I say: "No way to avoid it.", I'm referring to the tools that are on the system.
peterSowh: we've learned from this episode - folks are putting some automated upgrade tests in place that we didn't have before, hopefully notice stuff like this a bit earlier next time around
owhpeterS: Of course now I know that there were docs talking about it :(
