centrxkarsten no there are a lot of viruses on windows
Paddy_EIREjust general security
centrxmaybe no big outbreaks in the last few months
h2centrx no machine connected to the internet should be considered safe if it's running any servers
just higher and lower risk
centrxright
h2whoops
centrxwhich is why I use Windows 98
karstencentrx: Viruses in the sense of bvinary infectors are still a problem, yes, but there are many otehr problems to boot. The term "virus" has become somewhat watered down particularly in th epopular press.
h2meant smacher
Paddy_EIREwhat about bsd
fantasmahow do you change the console font in debian?
karstenPaddy_EIRE: Any system can be compromised if poorly maintained.
Paddy_EIREok
h2Paddy_EIRE: the sys admin is the main source of security or insecurity
DewiPaddy_EIRE: I've seen linux servers compromised at work or belonging to friends... twice I think
Paddy_EIREstill wondering whats considered good maintenance
h2it's their skill and knowledge that makes a box secure or insecure
centrxPaddy_EIRE for a personal computer, all you can do really is update
Paddy_EIREok
karstenPaddy_EIRE: Keep yuor services to a minimum (ssh should be most fi all you run on most workstations), know what your typical system looks like, keep an eye on logs and strange activity. Consider an offline (network) logger, and portscan your box from the outside.
centrxright, that's not "maintenance" per se though
those are one-time things
zinxmany a box has been compromised by running ssh with a poor password
karstenPaddy_EIRE: ... keep your system updated, run periodic rootkit checks and understand the output (there are false positives).
Dewicentrx: not really
centrxnevermind, I only read the first sentence
karstenPaddy_EIRE: Strong passwords and smart users help as well.
centrxkeeping services to a minimum is
Catachanuhm is there a quick way to determine if I have the C++ development lib's installed?
DewiCatachan: try to build something :P
Paddy_EIRE!security
dpkgPut "deb http://security.debian.org stable/updates main contrib non-free" in your /etc/apt/sources.list file to keep up-to-date on security updates in stable. Run "aptitude update" and "aptitude upgrade". If you're still running woody, consider "deb http://security.debian.org/debian-non-US stable non-US/contrib non-US/main non-US/non-free" for non-us security, or ask me about testing security or unstable security
karstenPaddy_EIRE: Don't run random untrusted executables (shell scripts included). If you must, consider creating a disposable local account for doing same.
Catachanyeah, that would work I guess
winfantasma: vga=0x303 boot option
karstenPaddy_EIRE: Realize that if your system is root compromised even the kernel can be changed, in-place, to lie to you about what's happening, so you inherently can't trust the system itself.
smacnay_Is iptables and shorewall stiil a good way to secure a box?
DewiCatachan: to start building things in general the fastest way to get up and running is to install the "build-essential" metapackage, but I don't know how much c++ stuff that includes
fantasmawin, I use vesafb-tng not the old vesafb drivers
