mfrischJoshJ you crashed a 1024 mb of ram only running a desktop?
JoshJwell, xchat and gaim
but they were only using like 30 mb total
something that doen't show up in gnome-system-monitor was using up the rest of it :\
i'm trying to find out what that IS
omarMLguys pls, I am installing a sarge in a PC of 32 RAM in a school, but I can't run the xfree86, I got an error "it has been modyfied by Deban, my version of xfree86 which is 4.3.0.1 is not supported by the xfree86" what can I do please
karstenJoshJ: FWIW, I use Konqueror heavily, Firefox for very little (Flash sites). Konq is at 83M RES, 124M virt, FF is 71M and 185M.
Azarremove gaim see if things still happen, then reinstall if not and remove firefox... etc etc etc
karstenJoshJ: with roughly 10x the usage on Konq, if not more.
bzedmfrisch: interesingly his swap is almost unused
mfrischJoshJ discribe crashing.
JoshJwell, the first time it did it, it completely locked up, threw me to a console with what looked like a core dump, and then came to a halt
Azarmfrisch: I guess is just freezing and he has to unplug the box ?
JoshJi had to shut it down by holding down the power button rather than letting it shut down "properly"
bzedJoshJ: sounds like a kernel related issue
mfrischbzed well unless I am using all of my cpu I barely touch the stuff either.
bzedmfrisch: yeah, but if your ram is full it should swap out to be able to cache
JoshJthe time it happened just now it just completely locked up on the desktop and didn't throw me anywhere
bzedmfrisch: you';re rearely using all ram at the same time
JoshJand yeah, i only had something stupid like 70 megs in the cache
mfrischbzed if its actually using it.
bzedJoshJ: I gues there's something in your kernel running amok
JoshJwith 900+ megs in the ram
bzed, and how would i find and/or fix that?
bzedJoshJ: which kernel version are you using? are you using any proprietary drivers?
JoshJno proprietary drivers, 2.6.18-4-686
bzedJoshJ: is the box connected directly to the internet?
AzarJoshJ: what you use for video? what card ?
JoshJethernet into my college LAN
"ati" driver
Azarthe Debian flgrlx or ati installation?
JoshJwell, xorg.conf says Driver "ati"
it's whatever Etch installs by default
mfrischJoshJ install slay and slay everyone except root
