NY Lost Funds

hatteras in he is the man page ?
jaredjAsk me about <doesn't work>
jwabrotman: actually I'll have to take that back. ethtool is low level stuff. I want to configure basic settings; IP, netmask, gateway, DNS (that's what etherconf used to do)
Azaryep
jaredjJW: iproute?
AzarJW open up the files and edit away
hatterjw: why u want ncurses for ?
jwAzar: that's exaclty what I don't want to do
abrotman!u

dpkgDamnit Jim! It's YOU. Y-O-U. Not *U*. U is a letter. YOU is a word. See ne1, or wud. Dutch for 'you' (formal singular). See http://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/?id=20041201
Azarah ok
hatteror ewe
jwhatter: I'm trying to explain to someone else how to change their IP and they're not knowledgeable enough for them to edit the file
they won't be doing it again, so there's no point in teaching them to use a text editor right now
hatterjw: thats a good reason
jwif I was on sarge I'd be done already
er, they.
jaredjJW: obscure sed -i commands?
jwIs there a way to get the basic installer's network Ncurses interface back up?
abrotmanJW: oh wait ..
jwjaredj: yes I /could/ do that but that's crazy for such a simple task
jaredjmeh, if it's one-off
jwWhat do you folks tell the newbies to use when they want to change their IP?
(if they're using Etch)
abrotmanare they using a GUI ?
gnome or kde etc
jwshell in KDE
if there's a KDE or Gnome app for it, that's fine
though I assumed there's more likely to be an ncurses interface for it
abrotmanthere is an app in both
i don't know what it is in KDE .. but there is one .. and there's definitely one in Gnome
jwAnd it works with Debian? I've always avoided the KDE/Gnome network config tools because I figured they don't really know what distro their on :-D
hatterthe one in gnome works finre
on etch
jwwhat's it's name?
hatteri would have to login to a box and check
hold on
abrotmangnome-network-preferences
maniencejaredj: do u have an idea, why $1, $2,... wont work in the .profile?
